Thinking about using 3-D printer to make a right swan neck

Hi, guys,
Here is the following situation. My professor get a 3D printing machine, as I recently running the machine so thinking about to use it print out a right swan neck (using stainless steel 420, maybe not the same as gen). However, I don't have tools (also skills) to take apart this watch. So my plan is if anybody can measure the exact size of the swan neck and send it to me, also some pic with details. Then I can do the computer and printing work. Or U can send me the CAD file also. I will make one swan neck and ship it to you also.
Hope can get some one in. PM or reply me if you are interested.
Cheers,

Just upload some pics of an Mario printed yesterday:cheese:
The golden outside is because I use copper to infiltrate the out layers. As you can see, the part need to be finished definitely.

Can you print the Y incabloc and longer screw also? This project is gonna be sweet.

By printer you mean CNC Milling machine? Because im not sure about "printing" (aditive process) of stainless steel.. I thought printers are used for some PVC materials etc...

Ahh, nope. You can 3d print in SS, brass, ceramic, almost anything on an expensive printer. The printers you are thinking of are cheap consumer products.

Printing metal involves laser sintering does it not? Not that similar to 3D printing as we know it, but possible.

Only a few issues with it, one is the finish, which tends to be rough, and the other is accuracy, which might be good enough. Either way the piece will need to be printed oversized and then re-finished properly.

Nope. You can 3d print in SS to an accuracy of .01 of a mm.
Solks is currently having a prototype case for his latest design dive watch printed.

Couldn't this then be the real breakthrough in 1:1 reps ?
You just need a high spec scanner and 3D printer.
Done !

+correct surface finish.. It isnt that simple... There is a lot of steps that needs to be done. I think micro CNC milling would be best according to surface quality

I'm not sure one can get a Geneva seal using a 3D printer...

This will be the wave of the future for a correct rep case to be launched. And no longer limited to the far East.

Yes

I'm sure some non rep companies will do a lot with it too if the costs are competitive.
At least it will lead to some small manufacturers using it.

Disruption. I like it.

Exactly, as I mentioned, it can work with SS, also ceramic.

Actually, I do have a laser scanner.
But it make no sense to ask some one send me a gen parts before we know each other, right? So try to do the swan neck thing first.

It's not SLS. Recently I am using binder-jetting. Surface quality for SLS is too poor for my former test.
Yes, finishing is need after the parts comes out. It won't be a hard work for the shape like swan neck. But when it comes to more complex parts, it would become a problem.
I have set the algorithm to do oversized printing. So there is space for the finishing.

This is a good idea
But as zergling says please concentrate in Swan Neck and don't make future projects and complete reps

Two remarks:
- Noob and H maker have different distance between fixation screws, bear it in mind. Most likely Noob is the same as gen (to be confirmed)
- The Swan Neck spring that you make will not be functional (like current SN spring in reps). Gen is made from a treated spring material by "Spark erosion", see my thread:
http://forum.replica-watch.info/vb/showthread.php/swan-neck-part-84847
You will get a good shaped Swan Neck "spring" but not a real SPRING due to the used material.
Spring specific material cannot be machined as usually you make in 3D printer.
Anyway this will be a great step !!

Good luck
