After seeing all this 1016 porn... And to be honst, it is my grail watch...
Is there a decent 'stock' replica around at the moment, that doesn't need modifications?

Unfortunately, no.

Simplest solution
Stock 1016 from TD
Pros: Cheap, easy
Cons: no drilled lugs, stock rep 16200 case, bezel less accurate, crystal wrong shape, dial is matte and mediocre, hands are too short, low crown position from 2836 case, looks brand new and not vintage

Minor build
Stock 1016 from TD or Tiger Concept 10160P and replace dial.
Pros: Cheap, easy, better dial
Cons: Drilled lugs only on Tiger Concept but case smaller than 36 mm, low crown position, others based on starting watch, mostly looks brand new unless you replace the dial with one that has patina lume

Raffles Build
36 mm Explorer 2824 Case drilled lugs
6610 Gilt Dial (really a 1016 dial)
NH35 movement or Seagull 2824
Old Style Silver Explorer ETA Hands
Oyster bracelet (solid, 20 mm, all brushed)
Pros: better dial than stock rep, drilled lugs, correct crown position, correct length hands, low beat if NH35
Cons: Requires assembly, drilled lugs might not fit 2 mm spring bars, rep 16200 case (not clear if modified), crystal less accurate, might need to source a seconds hand elsewhere, new looking unless you get a dial with patina

From there you are getting into Vietnam or custom cases and parts, e.g., JMB case, Vietnam dial and hands, etc.
Pros: more Gen like
Cons: more expensive, requires assembly by someone skilled

AlexTwist Please let me clarify something: everything I wrote depends on how close to gen you want, where your preferences fall on the NOS to heavy patina spectrum, and how much time and money you are willing to spend. I think a lot of people on this forum love the details and as a result it's harder for us (if I may be presumptuous) to accept a rep that is 80-90% of the gen in appearance. For me, the 1016s from TDs look like good homage watches rather than reps.

And that's whats great about this thread and forum. Everyone has a very specific example or examples in mind when building their 1016. I am interested in earlier production 1016s, so things like a domed acrylic crystal, gilt dial, and longer hands are most important. Case and bezel shape are important, too, but honestly I have less of an eye for that than others on this forum. I like the idea of using a low beat movement to mimic the sweep of the seconds hand of a 1560 or 1570, but that is just nice to have. We like certain details and want those, when possible.

But to each their own. If someone buys a 1016 from the TD and loves wearing it then I am happy for them. It isn't the 1016 for me, and that's OK. I like seeing how everyone's builds come together. But it's remarkable that almost every 1016 build that comes up for sale on this forum is sold within a day or two. That may or may not speak to the forum members' perception of 1016s from TDs.

Does JMB sell just the bezels? Always thought it was full case sets only

And here is the last build: 1500 gen case, 5500 yuki dial, and a ETA cal.
Simple, easy and nice
(i'm waiting for a gen 503 crown instead of the 602 installed)

I just got myself a 15000 case- was wondering what ETA cal you used? Will a standard 2824 suffice? Hoping a 15000 will hold a similar movement as the 1500...

I’ve already checked and….. mine is a 1500 (not 15000 sorry) case
And the eta is a 2824
Not sure if the 15000 fits a 2824 too

Sorry for the noob question, but how much would a build like the beauty above cost if I commissioned such work to one of you expert builders? "turnkey" so to speak? I am particularly interested in the Reference 1016 (Matte Mark 4) of 1975...
