Just in case any of you would like to know what the device is called that protects your house from water backing up through your sewer its called a "Back Water Valve" Its basically a heavy duty check valve.

they are used to stop water hammer in pipes , another type of surge suppressor is used to stop pipes from flailing around in atomic powerplants and breaking under impulse from seismic or nuclear shock! they are used as "hangers" and can absorb[ depending on the size of the suppressor] from a few pounds, up to 1/2 million pounds of surge ! there are indeed all kinds of surge suppressors! includeing those in ABS anti skid break systems .
