So has everyone seen the movie, " I am Legend"???
That was just a question... Now the topic of my post. How many people if any are worried about the swine flu that is headlining EVERY fricken channel on the television today? Since I am in San Diego, I am probably getting bombarded worse than most (6 cases here in San Diego County) and New York I bet is getting hit pretty hard with the media flashes.
If there are any genetic engineers here... Can someone please tell me how a pig flue and bird flue NATURALLY combined with a human flu to become this hybrid terror? Anyone smell a genetically engineered/altered hybrid that may/maynot have been created in a lab???
OH, and has everyone seen the movie, "I am Legend"???

I saw "I Am Legend". And found it relatively unsatisfying, by the way.

But I work in the ER, and we're not panicked about swine flu. And we ARE kind of laughing at patients who come in with a cough and they're scared to death because they've been around Mexican people.

The viruses are not getting genetically engineered in a lab. Viruses can mutate and swap genes all the time. This is why people get flu shots every year, because the vaccine from one year is not likely to cover the next year's strains. This is not much different from the human influenza, at least symptom-wise and prognosis-wise. But it sucks because we don't have a decent vaccine for humans.

another case of the for profit media trying to scare the shit out of the masses to make money.. Just imagine the sales figures on surgical masks now! lol

and yea, I saw I am Legend.. pretty good movie, think Mr. Smith did pretty good at loosing his mind.. The ending could have been done a bit different, but all in all, I'll give it a thumbs up..

Probably surgical masks won't be so expensive, but I'd be curious to see what happens with the pharmaceutical companies that make Relenza and Tamiflu. Actually, last year the flu vaccine gave relatively poor coverage for the strain of influenza that eventually ended up going around; we had not only patients, but hospital personnel all getting really sick. I speculated then that that would have been a tidy trick if someone from the pharmaceutical companies could sabotage the vaccine manufacturers.

Kind of off topic-

I am Legend is a remake/adaptation of The Omega Man (1971 film w/ C. Heston). The Omega Man was based off of a 1950's Sci Fi Novel entitled I am Legend. I believe there are others versions out there as well. The best of them being The Omega Man....I think.

yea, all big business is evil.. it was prolly the pharmaceutical companies that released the new strain, just so they could attempt to kill it off with their new improved drugs.. but be careful the new flu vaccine may cause impotence, but its OK! we have a drug for that!

And then we have drugs for the STD's that the newly non-impotent guys get.

As long as I can have bacon with breakfast tomorrow, I'm good.

So long as you're in the habit of cooking your bacon first, you should be fine.

A high school here in NY has 48 people confirmed with the swine flu. So the media is inducing a panic it would seem.
So I estimate I'll be driving through a barren city in a week or so listening to bob marley .
So if any of you are left I will be at the south street seaport everyday at noon, when the sun is highest in the sky.
Light up the darkness.....

most of the time, all you ever really have to do with most any scenario is follow the money...

is it in the vested interest of pharmaceutical companies to cure you completely and/or eliminate outright an illness/disease? or is it better for their annual revenues that there is always something new needed (or just to be feared), to make you feel better temporarily, or something that requires it to be taken continually w/o interruption there everafter.

for the pharmaceutical companies, with billions upon billions of annual revenue at stake, which side of the coin do you think they'll fall on?

"...hence the phrase 'as greedy as a pig'." -bricktop, Snatch

i personally didn't like 'I am Legend' that much; i enjoyed '28 days later' more...

Dr. Sanje Gupta (I know I slaughtered that one...) Just stated the 36k people die each year in the US from different forms of influenza... HOLY SHIT.
So since we are only talking about 60 sick people in the US, how exactly is it that I cant watch any normal television today?

my friend who's a gp doctor said something like 100k die a year from mis-diagnosed, wrongly prescribed, or unknowingly fatal combo's of med's given. don't know the validity of that statement (medical ppl, does that hv the ring of truth to you?), but he said you'll never hear about it in general media, because of who stands to lose from that news... but 60 cases of swine flu in the US, n CBR can't turn on the TV...

I'd like to chime in on this one. I was in college for longer than I would like to admit....and I did manage to convince the powers that be to grant me a PhD in immunology before I left. So I'd like to concur with one of the previous posters that brought up the death statistics from the regular flu in a given year - I think its on the order of 30-40k per year.

The fact that we now have pig/human flu bug being transferred from human to human is troublesome, but its not the big deal it is being made out to be. The antiviral drugs we have are working, and tests are underway to determine if the flu vaccine people received this year will protect them.

In this day and age you will likely not see anything like the flu plagues of old. We have better medicine, better communication, and most of all, better sanitation.

The problem may be a bit larger in Mexico, but the country does not have uniformly high health care standards in all areas of the country. I bet they also have a larger toll from the regular flu every year...but it doesn't make the news.
