Contemplating getting one...most of the reviews I've read on Amazon are not exactly favorable. Anyone have any experience with it?

I thought all the Suunto's were massive, like 50mm. That was possibly the explorer type one with alitmeter and all sorts of silly functions.

If you're going watch based HR monitor, I'd recommend Polar.

What are you going to use the HR monitor for? Running? Cycling? (If it's cycling I could hook you up with a HR cycling computer, pm me).

Any particular model that I should look for with comparable features? I'm not really familiar with fitness watches. Its going to be used for running and cycling, but not anything heavy.

You can get a Mio very cheap and it is an excellent wireless heart rate monitor watch.
Suunto makes incredible watches for outdoor activities, but I've not heard good things either about their heart monitor watches.

+1. I love my Suunto Observer (Thanks, Adam!!), but their HRMs are shite, to be polite.

Hey, that rhymes! :)

Awesome info. Mio is a good brand as well? I'm over my head right now, never had or even thought about buying one.

EDIT: is there a Mio that uses a chest strap? I'd rather not mess with the "one-touch" methods.

Robb, I bought my Vector for the HRM and because I wanted a classic "modern" military watch. That and I hate feckin' G-Shocks. What I found was the other "doo dads" (altimeter, barometer and compass) are really cool toys but the HRM lacks versatility. I think it functions fine. I can even use it while wearing my Polar chest unit. It just doesn't record data like a Polar can nor does it allow you to store that data on a computer. I have also heard conflicting stories about the Suunto's durability but as I am not humping up and down the mountains of Afghanistan, I don't foresee any problems.

IMO Polar makes the best HRM's out there. The thing about Polar that I really don't care for is you have to send the watch and the chest unit back to Polar in order to change the battery. That sucks. Suunto; a quarter and a CR 2032 and your good to go.

If all you're really looking for is a good monitor and the ability to track progress and store info, then look no further than Polar. FYI, I own a Polar F6 which has a good range of function and looks OK. If your hating their aesthetics (like me) Google "top rated heart rate monitors", check out consumersearch.com or try Runner's World online to see what the experts say. Now that I'm thinking of it, heartratemonitorsusa.com has a great selection catagorized by activity, great customer service and free UPS Next Day Air.

If all that doesn't overwhelm you, then I hope it helps bro'. ;)

Many thanks, G. I'm looking for something no-frills...I don't need recording or syncing with a computer or bike pod compatibility or GPS or anything. Just something I can check my heart rate on the go without having to hold my fingers down on a watch. All I need it to do is to read accurately whenever I glance down at it. I've got my eye on a few Polars...I'll check out that site like you suggested

So I ended up buying a Suunto HRM today, but not the T1C. I got the M1, the most basic HRM they had. I was all set to go out and buy a Polar, but on the way out the door I sat down at the computer and I found the Suunto on eBay for a song and decided to try it out. I figure if it is terrible as a HRM, at least it will still make for a nice rugged everyday watch with a tiny bit of style.

don't hate me! :sofa:

Simple heart rate monitors are so 2009!

For the money of a higher range Polar you can get a Garmin GPS Heart rate monitor. I do trail running and flying, it gives all the data a good Polar will with tracking that interfaces with google maps. You can compare your times, you can program it to bark at you if your not at your programed pace. Thats just the start of what it can do.

Check it: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=142

The thing that sucks about alot of these watches is they make the cheaper ones look ugly or famine and as they get more expensive they look MUCH better.

44mm ain't so bad.

We need pics!

Here's a few. It wears tiny though....it feels (and kinda looks) like a 40mm watch on my wrist. Super lightweight, which I love.

I was looking at the FR60 for a while. After some consideration I realized that I won't be using 90% of the functions that it has. the GPS is nice, but I run around my town where I know exactly where I am and can keep tabs on my pace just by looking at my time and seeing where I am. Granted the FR60 would have been awesome, but after having the M1 I realized that it's all I really need....an HR monitor with a chest strap, that doubles as a simple digital watch. Maybe sometime I'll upgrade to a Vector HR, who knows.
