Sub vs. SMP

I always hated the Rolex Submariner. But I recently decided to buy a 16610 and see what's what. (This thread is just for fun, not a review.)

The thing I hated about Rolex is that many people use the name purely for status. But I discovered the beauty of the things and want to show what I think.

The contenders:

Rolex 16610 - noobmariner - 21J

Omega Seamaster Professional 300m - ETA - Mods + superluminova C3

The Omega was a watch I whore for 4 months straight. Loved the thing. But he! What did I know. Never wore a Rolex.

I especially liked the wavy dial and bracelet. (Oh yes and the 007 thing;))

Bracelets:

Rolex: Really elegant. Goes with everything and is unbelievable comfortable. Really love it.

Omega: Really liked the 5 piece links. The contrast. But it get's old. Bit too massive (doesn't taper) and maybe doesn't integrate with the watch that well as the rolex does.

My new favorite:

It really is a joy to wear. Sits really nice on the wrist. Size is spot on. Even the SMP looks hugh next to it. The 16610 really is a masterpiece IMO and will be my daily beater for a long time.

That means my first love, the smp, must go. Can't love more than one watch.;)

funny that with submariners hey, I thought they were crap until I tried out a $48 special 21j 16610 from timeshops and now I love it and it's the only watch I wear.

The Sub is just a classic and always under-estimated.
The SMP is far more interesting and sporty.
Yes - you CAN love them both!

I love these mini comparisons. Nice job.

I think the clasp needs to be factored in. The SMP wins hands down. ;)

I wear both off and on ... And love then both.

When going to formal events I tend to wear the omega.
When doing a buiz casual or night out on the town I tend to wear the rolex.

Not sure why, just something I've noticed.
- I love my sub. It's been modded by BK, Fakey, Vac and myself. Has a few gen parts and a lot of love haha.
I've had and modded about 20 or so subs over the past few years. So subs as you can guess are my thing lol.

But the SMP definitely grew on me.
Lately I've been thinking about a Frankenstein PO ....0_o

I just not digging the flimsy Rollie clasp.

No you're right about that. Omega's clasp is way better. But the one on the Rolex isn't as bad as I thought it would be. I do like the lightness of the thing. And I don't know... feels vintage? It feels like history:thinking:

Another convert!!! Both nice watches and I prefer the Sub not because of the name but the classic design that will go anywhere. Thanks for the comparison...

I also like this 009, but it's a completely different type of look
:p

And this is also a classic for a night out on the town - sometimes the sub wears to big with some of my shirts. This slide nicely under the cuff.
Sorry about the shitty pic quality.

This is my dress down watch .. A nice Nixon .. Glows like a torch.

But my true love will always be my sub

I like the sub, but they are a dime a dozen. I prefer the Omega all the way around. If I where to buy Gens, I'd straight up go Omega

I think that today Omega sells more than Rolex. Anyway that is what the AD said.

Ive always been a SMP fan. I've owned both the rep and gen for years without the thought of selling them ever crossing my mind.

The Sub was always one of those "I just had to have one for the heck of having one" watches. I would wear it a few days and sell it off cause I got bored of it. I've gone through 3 or 4 subs to date, BUT its weird cause for some reason, after I get rid of it, I always go back wanting one!!!

I just bought another Sub this morning :)

I too own, wear and like both. However, I like the feel of the Rolex better, because it is simply a better fit on my wrist - I also like the fact that the Rolex is a timeless classic.

The Submariner is one of the most comfortable watches I've ever worn. I can wear it comfortably loose and it still stays centered on my wrist instead of leaning to one side or another. The sub is not too light, or too heavy. The SMP is also very comfortable. its bracelet has more heft than the sub, but the case is less chunky. The SMP (gen) glows like a torch that was lit to signal something out in the far reaches of the Earth's orbit. Nothing burns like it!

OP, can you tell us more about your 300m? It looks great. Where did you source it, and what mods have you done?

Thanks!
