Strange issue, 2824-2 stops intermittantly... screw crown too tight?

Having an odd issue with an ETA 2824-2.

I notice that about every 5-10 hours, the second hand stops just before 12 even if fully wound. Sometimes a shake gets it going, and can also get going by unscrewing the crown a turn.

I am now trying with the crown screwed in looser to see if any improvement, but any ideas why this could happen?

Another curious thing I noticed was that when regulating the movement, when i pressed on the screw to regulate, the watch stopped. Any pressure in the area of the balance wheel stopped the watch.

Any idea what could be the issue? Stem a touch too long?

Well it still stopped last night even with the crown unscrewed. Very odd.

Hi, i was trying to help one of the forum members who had a Abyss with a 2824 with similar issues. It had all the symptoms of a stem that was cut too long , but in fact it was not the case.

Heres a quote from a PM he sent me ...

Just letting you know how i got on with the breitling abyss you where helping me with.
The repair guy has fixed it ( cost $60 though )
He said the setting wheel was actually upside down , i dont know what that apparently means it would have never worked so am as you can imagine pissed at the dealer."

Hi,

Just a thought, if the watch is still stopping every 5-10 hours it could be a host of things,
Mainspring sticking, dirt or damaged teeth on the hour wheel etc, etc. however the fact that you say when you release the stem the watch runs again intrigues me, does the watch restart without a shake ?.

I am purely guessing at the moment, but I suspect the hands are catching on the dial where the hour wheel breaks through the dial. This does occur when people have shunted the dial to get perfect DWO alignment, its worth a look !

When you adjust the timing of the movement with the adjusting screw, the watch stops, this is not uncommon on the 28 series eta, only very light downward pressure with the correctly sized screw driver is necessary to adjust, the balance cocks on the eta's are not that strong and unreasonable pressure will cause the balance staff to "bottom" on the end stones.

It has started stopping now even with the crown unscrewed.

Rarely stops on the wrist but quite quickly at rest.

I think there must be a tooth damaged or a bit of dirt or something...

From what you are saying a quick service would find he fault, so I would definitely go that way, otherwise we are all guessing.
