I received my DSSD V5 from Eurotimez today. The overall impression is good, however, I was a bit disappointed with the crystal. I would have expected at least a good quality crystal on this watch, for the price I paid even maybe a Saphire. But the crystal on my model distorts the dial the same way a cheap version would, and I have owned cheap watches that had a better crystal than this, plus there is no crown at the "6". Otherwise I like it, the bezel rotates smoothly as does the crown. The second hand sweeps nicely. The bracelet has the ratchet system to adjust the length which is cool as I had to take three links out to fit it to my wrist, then just adjusted it a tad and it fit perfect.

the gen distorts the dial and you should never be able to see the crown etching with the naked eye unless you have extraordinary eyesight and bright lights at just the right angle. i have 3 gens and can't see the etching on any of them without extreme magnification and very bright lighting. the crap etching you see on the reps is very bad.

go to your ad and look for yourself.

nice pics! especially the lume shots and the close ups. this rep seems pretty close to the gen. i wonder if timeshops ultimate version is better...

Are you sure the gen distorts the dial? you mean it doesn´t have a saphire crystal?
I looked for the coronet with a magnifying glass and did not find it. But thanks for the info on the crystal, I would have thought that Rolex would use a crystal more along the lines of the Omega PO saphire.

Gio,

Superb piece and great shots... I also have a DSSD, mine is a V3 from Timeshop. Only bad point is the bezel pearl insert... The positioning, shape and colour of the pearl are way off, although the bezel itself is much beetter since I did the paint job on it... Is the correct pearl replica avaialble as a replacement part from any of the Dealers or even a complete new DSSD bezel???

Congrats on yours...

You might be able to buy a pearl and/or insert from one of the dealers; I'm not sure.

FYI--I've said this in multiple threads, but it doesn't seem to have caught on like it should have: as far as the crystal goes, whether it's mineral glass or synthetic sapphire, the molecular make-up of the crystal has little to do with the distortion you see. All of these crystals, except on the el cheapo 21J versions, are sapphire. Distortion is refraction and refraction is caused by shape, not chemistry.

Yes, the gens have a bit of distortion, but only about 20-30% of what you'll find in the V5 crystal. The reason why the V5s have this distortion is because of the shape of the crystal; from V1-V4 the crystals were flat on the bottom surface and convex (domed) on the top. People complained about the engraved rehaut looking too deep, so instead of manufacturing new cases and recalibrating a slew of machinery to make a shorter rehaut, smaller engraving, and all that goes along with that, they decided by switching to a crystal that was convex on both top & bottom the curvature of the glass gives the appearance that the rehaut is shallower. Of course, one of the side-effects that comes along with this is the distortion. The glass crystals look the same as the sapphire ones do on this model.

Very good explanation Gio. My SuperOcean Chronograph has more distortion than my new Steelfish. Breitling made the very changes you mentioned here. Opposite order of course. :)

As I posted earlier. The pearl in my watch seems to be correct as far as I can tell. The lume is as good as the rest of the watch, which is not very bright, to be honest. But the bezel is fantastic, at least 120 clicks and very tight, nothing loose at all, just great!

Warning, the printing on the dials are all crooked from Eurotimez. At least 10 of them I have seen are like this. They are "researching" the issue.

I would make sure they prove with very clear photos that the print is dead on like every other Rep Rolex has before they ship one to you.
