I've been skulking around the forum for some time now and I've never been to fond of the idea of having to build my own watch until recently, I saw some true works of art now I can't get the idea out of my head! I'm screwed, I know! My question to you is this; 114060 no date Sub or a classic AP Diver?? Either will probably be purchased as a higher end noob model. Any opinions on my choice or tips on where to start would be appreciated!

It's a work of art! I think it's gotta be a sub for me as well, just so classic!! Thank for the input.

if its gonna be your first build, youre prob better off starting with a rolex.

just be sure to check and double check measurements and compatibility.
just because theyre the same models, doesnt always mean theyre built with the same specs.

ive seen rep 1680 dials from 26mm all the way up to 29mm. (gen is 26.5)

i think youd have a better chance at sourcing parts for a 5513 build if youre wanting to do a no date sub.
i havent seen many 114060s.

you can get started at yukiwatch.com or http://www.jewelryandwatch.com/ if you wanna get pricey.

When you pick a watch that isn't widely repped it becomes very difficult to get a gen construction case to start the build with... I got lucky and found a aftermarket case set for my build,,,, but sometimes it just doesn't work out like that.

+1

i would start by just buying a model i really liked and modding it.
just ask around and find one with somewhat gen like construction. 16610 is probably your best bet to start with as there are many variations of this as well as parts to go with it.

dont think you can just buy a case here, dial there, movement there and expect it all to come together without a hitch.
it takes a LOT of research and scouring the web for parts to pull off a proper build.

Funny how one item can start a big project. Got a twin lock 700 crown for $60 and now I'm building a $3000 v72 daytona.

Thank you all for your suggestions and help! The general plan is to find the best rep I can currently (within reason) and periodically do upgrades on the watch until I have it as close to gen as possible. I love the classic sub and have owned a few different older model gens in the past so this new challenge is pretty interesting to me. I accept the fact that it's no overnight venture and embrace it with open arms! Should be fun right :bull:

Classic sub, just get a TC and a gen insert.
You're really not gonna be able to improve on that too much without getting a bunch of gen parts.
I do think TC subs would look a lot better with lug holes

Hell, I'm considering selling a few pieces and getting one.

I was was not a big fan of subs when I first got in to reps but after getting a decent 16610, it's really all I wear. That and my modded 1680.

I've been slowly trying to get started on a 16800 like Mitch's but cases available today just don't cut it. :(
if it was gonna be a cheap build or even just a modded rep, i would be game but practically everything for a 16800 is custom/gen. I'm glad Mitch told me this before I started. My original plan was to get a TC mid case, get holes drilled and pop a 16800 dial in there. Lol. I've learned that it's not that easy.

There are plenty of rolex experts on this forum that will teach you about things you never even noticed before. Once you notice them, you can't unnotice them.

If you haven't already, go to the rolex section and read everything you can about the model you wanna build.

Ok, thank you for the TC suggestion, I've been reading through his site for the past three hours now and it seems like that's definitely the route I want to go especially if his watches are only 100$ more than the noob model I was considering.

The only downside for me is he doesn't currently offer the 114060 which I had my heart set on if I was going the Rolex route. All the models he offers come with the old style of bracelet which is hard for me to get over.

When it comes down to it I want the look and feel of the watch and bracelet to be as close to gen like as possible, I'm even considering buying a gen bracelet eventually and of course if it will fit on a rep.

Does TC really have the Noob factory beat by so much?? Or could I buy the Noob and replace a few essential parts to have almost a gen like feel? Thanks again for everyone's help!!

youre comparing 2 different watches man.

theres a major difference between the classic sub and the new ceramic sub.

TCs subs are the 16610. the model before the ceramic. aka the classic.
it has the hollow mid link bracelet as the gen. the newer solid link bracelets are better but it doesnt come on the old subs. sure you could buy a gen bracelet but to me, its not worth it.

go to the rolex section and do some reading.
theres a lot to learn there.

Lol... This is what all new people needs to do.... "Get on the Rolex section and read", read, read and then read some more before they buy anything, it is the most important thing you'll ever do concerning reps.... See BC, in the end this always had to be what's said...

Yup. Definitely the TC route with the classic 16610 sub. Then you can slowly upgrade parts with gen parts. Bezel insert is usually the first upgrade.

If you're planning on upgrading the dial and hands at some point to gen, it might be a good idea to get a yuki 3135 movement when they become available at the end of the month. They're really hard to find right now, and probably will be again when they sell out of this batch.
