First post here :) normally frequent a different forum, but need all the help I can get.. thanks :)

I recently acquired a watch with a 6497-1 swiss movement.
When I wound it up and placed it on my wrist and wore it, I realized about an hour or two later that it was running slow... lost maybe about 30 minutes in the 2 hours.

Upon wearing it throughout yesterday it wouldn't keep time at all... kept running slow.

I went home, adjusted the time just for the hell of it, and left to go out.

I came back 4 hours later... and the watch was running fine!!!

I decided to leave it over night just to see if I can get a consistent measure. And yes it was perfect this morning when I woke up.... to the DOT.

I took it off the counter... placed it on my wrist.. went to feed the dogs and run a few errands... in the last 15 minutes I am behind 4-5 minutes......

Seems like the watch has to be on a flat surface in order to keep time.

For giggles, I placed the watch upside down... backcase up... it stops keeping time all together, I don't hear the ticking. Reviewed it on my wrist... and sometimes it'll just stop all together also if my had is completely at my side (crown/guard straight down towards floor)

Anybody ever have this happen? Please advise, I hope this is something I can fix myself because I don't want to take have to spend money at a watchsmith if I can help it.

THanks so much in advance.

It's apparently running fine in one position and stopping in the other?

I'd take the back off and check all the bridge screws. Probably a loose screw.

I bought a cheap 21j sub a few weeks ago and it does exactly the same as what you are describing. If I leave it on the table it keeps time fine but when its on my wrist and moving it tends to stop and start loosing up to 15 mins every hour. When it has stopped it just needs the slightest tap and it starts going again.

Thing is it only cost $30 so is not worth sending back to china for repair. Is there anything I can check to see what is wrong with it? Bare in mind I am a noob so not up to taking the whole watch apart lol

Cheers guys

This may sound too simple but try taking the back off completely and observing the balance in all the positions, dial up, down, sideways etc. The movement could be a very tight fit in the case and cause it to run erratically. Worth a try anyways.

I took the back off and noticed that the movement stops when the crown is facing the downwards position.

I think your watch movement has a serious problem in the pivots of the balance wheel or the hairspring is not concentric. You need a specialist wachsmith.

Sounds liike a broken balance staff or balance jewel (pivot or cap). If the watch has been dropped this could be the trouble. If it is just a jewel, a good watchmaker can fix easily. If the balace staff broken, might be a bit harder to fix.

Eek... balance staff sounds bad.

The best thing to do is to send it out for service then I'm imagining?

Thanks :)
