Ok, so this has been that itch I just can't scratch! We've all had them, the ones that just chap your A$$!! So, I've got to vent now...

Here at work for the past few weeks, we have this guy, he's been considerate enough to bring in the grapefruits that grow off his tree/s. However, this moron has a nerve to put up a box in our break room area, place the grapefruits in them, and then has a sign on the box that reads ".25ea, for large orders dial ext 4xxxxx", you get the picture.

Now seriously, you're going to bring food in, and leave it unattended but have the nerve to ask for money!? Really!? How facken dumb can you possibly be?
It's not like it costs this guy his life to charge or even have the nerve to ask for money.
And to boot, this guy is an engineer here, most certainly making $80k+ a year. Is he that broke that he has to ask for money for something grows in his back yard?

Now, if he had a charity box for like lets say, the blind kids of Tucson, I could see his intent, but he doesn't. And I know he doesn't have this in mind, because I have overheard a conversation about him doing this just because.

Here is the funny part, some other guy who apparently told this guy to his face "you're a moron", put up a box right next to his, that reads "FREE, for large orders, just take more!". Hahaha, now that's classic!

So, although this tool was called out, he still does his thing.

Damn, some people are just born MORONS!!

Rant over, thanks!

I'll say it. Not a big deal.
We have a guy at work that brings in eggs from a family farm and does the exact same thing. He probably makes high 60's for his job.
I never thought twice about it.
I have other things to moan about, like my property taxes that have gone through the roof.

I'm with jeffmtbr. We've had a few people where I work sell their eggs here too. Their eggs are lots better than the ones from the grocery store and I certainly don't mind paying some money for the trouble and expense they take raising their chickens and collecting the eggs. And I'd love to have a fresh grapefruit for $0.25.

Sure, it would be nice if the guy wanted to give away his grapefruit free, but I hate to think that someone should be labeled a moron for that reason alone.

I can understand both sides of the arguement here. BUT it's also only 0.25c a grapefruit. Also he knows some ppl will take one and not leave a quarter and he probably doesn't care. Suppose it's free, it also bugs me that there are those that take a bunch and not leave some for others. That's just plain inconsiderate as well. People will be people no matter what.

Just my opinion, it doesn't matter how much he earns per year, what he did is legit and doesn't qualify him as a moron. I have been to one of the strawberry farms in a small suburb of Stuttgart. The farmer packaged all the strawberry per 500g nicely and put a box for buyer to put money on it (price was given). Noone attended the place and it's OK. The locals visit the place to buy fresh strawberry and they put the money on the box. It was not locked or anything. Will people run away with the whole box of money and the fruits? Very unlikely IMHO.

Well, at least the fruit who brings the grapefruits is not a scumbag... like the low-life who used to help himself with my yogurt in one of my unit's fridge... to make him stop (it happened 2-3 times!), I had to write a note and stick it my yogurt that said something like:

"Scumbag: I licked the top... but should you still decide to steal MY fuckin' yogurt, I will hunt your ass just to give you a lesson in good manners I guarantee you won't ever forget!"

Now I signed (and did have a reputation from long before that event) and I imagine the guy probably didn't realize who he had been stealing from... all I know is that I never had any problem with my food after that!

What if this guy needs quarters for parking/laundry and can't go to the bank because he gets out of work too late and his wife is a dumb lazy smutt that won't do a damn thing she's told? And even if she did do what she's told, she'll end up coming home with dimes... wtf is up with that... in fact I wouldn't be surprised if his wife came back with magical beans. Seriously, they should get a divorce.

I went off topic... yea maybe he just needs quarters?

25 cents for a fresh homegrown grapefruit, that's a pretty good deal to me. Now if he was asking for a dollar then I would just steal them all and leave him a thank you note.
Maybe he's feeling the recession and is trying to fill up his piggy bank? I could count all the times I could have used a quarter when I needed it. I'm sure he probably uses it for tolls or something.

i sometimes go to work in my pink tutu and steel-toed boots and stand next to the watercooler w/ a little jar and a sign that says $0.25 for a peek. then if someone drops in a quarter, i flash them. it doesn't really cost me anything (i've no 'cents' of decency), but i still like to charge a quarter. n with the bailout funds that came in, my bonus came out to be $650,000,000,000,000,000,000.25. so maybe i don't need the change, i dunno...

that's not as bad as one of the temporary female workers in my office taking out my coffee creamer in front of me, using some and offering me some of my own coffee creamer. i declined and she told it's there for everyone to use. she didn't make it through the day and i had her temp agency pull her from her assignment to our office.

the grapefut guy has not done nothing wrong ... no harm no foul. you could not go to the grocery store and get a grapefruit for 25cents -- fresh off the tree to boot!

I like giving fruits, coffee and the such that grows in my Fincas for free, I guess that's why I frown upon what the guy did. To each his own I guess. :|

Wow... I think someone just complained about someone else using their COFFEE CREAMER. What is this world coming to when a coffee creamer in a company refrigerator is sacred.
I guess if it happens enough the neurons in your brain start to go haywire and your trigger finger can no longer be controlled.

After reading these posts I thank the stars I don't work in an office.

How about selling hands in the office? You could go around the office tomorrow, yelling: "Who needs a hand? Whoooo neeeeeds a haaaand?" $3 per hand! Big hand, small hand! I'll put in a finger when you get two hands!"

Well one thing is sharing, and another being abusive... if I went to your house and then just don't say a word, go to the kitchen and help myself to whatever I find, I guess you would be a bit angry. :p

If you are that skilled to come to my house, raid my fridge, AND dodge a .45 caliber bullet shot at your head, you deserve to eat whatever I have.

Just kidding. I use a shotgun. lol

No but seriously.. I love peace.

Eggs are different. Eggs are anything but free to produse. Chickens can cost a fair old whack if you want good eggs and lots of them. I'm surprised that folk find it strange to buy eggs at work. These people have in all probality tasted a real egg. Much like freash milk, whole different ball game.

All is relitive tho. If he just has a grapefruit tree that produces more than he uses then it's a bit much to charge folk at work for the excess. Besides, people appreciate some free fruit and the kudos gained by provideing same may well outweigh the profit from charging for them.
However, if he has a hobby farm and actualy grows friut for a side line (and income) then of cause chargeing is appropiate.
