@Johnnylazar - Lookin' good! What are the details on it so far?
@pjsayer - I feel like such a slacker everytime I see yours! LOL :) Have I asked you about your dial yet? I see some texture on it. What did you do to make this look so awesome?

Its a wbk case, dial, low beat movement, 2mm bars, clark crystal and bezel insert thats bleached. I still wanna work on a bracelet and do some other things to it. Ill probably work on it this week! Thanks for the compliment man!

Hi Menny no I'm the slacker - the only mod I have performed since taking ownership is the crystal swap! The 1680 was originally Beda's from RG and I was lucky enough to snaffle it up from the sales boards. The dial is stock but has been relumed and aged really nicely - I love the creamy white patina [emoji3]

That dial is indeed very nice looking. I'm really admiring it and the build in general. It's perfect. If I could get my red dial to look like that I'd be in hog heaven. A Big Dazza spa treatment to the dial and hands could certainly provide the effect I am looking for. That, along with the T19, could be heaven.

I just received my new handmade strap, courtesy of Martu Straps. I put it on along with my gen spec, fat Yuki bars today. I'll do a proper write-up with more pics and info about the wonderful strap maker, as well. Here's a taste.

I want to say that is a really cool watch but "really cool" doesn't do it justice!

Since this is the 1680 thread, can we talk crowns?

The red 1680s originally came with a 700 twinlock and then at the end came with 702 triplocks. Both are correct, and at service the twinlocks were usually replaced with triplocks. Athaya offers both a 700 and a 702 and both are outstanding. Which would you guys put on yours?

Personally the earlier the better, I'd go twin where possible. Trips continued for a long time into the modern age, so they're less Red vintage specific IMO.

Thanks for the reply. That's what I was leaning towards. It is hard to find good info online about when Rolex stopped using the various 7mm crowns and switched to new versions. On Network54 there was a discussion about the 5 different 7mm sub crowns used over the years (2 twinlock and 3 triplock) but the only date mentioned was 1980 for a switch, and I couldn't tell if that was the change from 702 to 703 or not. I think so.

It looks like Athaya's 700 is for a .9mm stem and I believe the 702 is the same size. From what people have said the 702 is an easy replacement, so which do get?

Decisions, decisions!

I got the same Red 1680 from WBK with the same crown. Very happy with it but is that the correct crown for it? I've seen so many different crowns on 1680s I'm confused.

The first 1680's had the 700 reference crown, later replaced with the 702. That one in the pic looks more like a 703 crown, so not really correct, but if Rolex services a 1680 sub they will systematically replace the crown - not necessarily with the correct reference...
