Hi All,

Hope anyone with experience on shipping with FedEx or DHL can help with some guidance advice.

Have just left the UK for the US for 4-6 weeks and just had 2 new AP Roc 26240s delivered a week late due to the storm in the UK so I missed the delivery!!

I want to get the Mrs to FedEx express to my hotel in the US via FedEx express or DHL express

Could any of you give me guidance on how to approach this in terms of documentation / declaration etc was my 40th bday last week - send as gift? Broken parts.

Any insight / experiences sincerely welcome

Thank you all in advance

I wouldn't suggest using anything other than regular postal service. 99% of all the issues with customs I've seen through the forums are with FedEx and DHL over the years. I'm sure it's a small percentage of the total shipments but much more frequently posted about when compared to USPS which is very rarely mentioned stopped based on posts throughout the forums.

I wouldn't take the chance to have the watch or watches shipped from the UK and just wait till you get home to enjoy them. If the package gets seized by customs you will have lost your money and would have to order another two watches.

Thank you guys greatly appreciated - it begs the question if I had left my regular beater at home (Gen) and needed my wife to ship it what service if any would you use. Wouldn’t normally be an issue but could be away 6 weeks or longer hotel hopping (hence the need for express)

I was going to send them in two separate packages to further mitigate the risk

Conversely does that increase it as they see two packages come through the network?

Be sure to read the small print when considering which courier to use.

Some have very limited insurance coverage which is why I've tended to also use third party coverage when I've bought or shipped out a genuine piece.

Like what said above, I would never send watches internationally via Fedex/UPS/DHL. Just about everything that is declared as a watch, jewelry or PM gets examined. If you don't declare them and they examine the package they are gone. You also have to remember that these packages are going by air and they go through a system similar to what is used to scan carry-ons at the airport. It will pick up objects even if they are concealed within something else, like putting the watches in a cut-out book, etc.

I send a lot of work to a modder in Europe and I use the post office and never send him complete watches, usually just the midcase and, if work is needed, the caseback. I always put the midcase and back separate so they can tell the watch is not complete.

From looking at the stickers on packages I have received they appear to be pre-screened or sorted in their country of origin and I suspect they grease a few palms during the screening process. They also route packages through countries where they are subject to less scrutiny, for example all of the parts from Vietnam I have received were shipped from Singapore.

Sometimes even these packages get examined again in the states which is when they would be found, in that case the TD sends another one.

I'm in the US and regular airmail is what is safest. I used to use Toro's expedited DHL a long time ago which got seized. Had other TD's tell me regular airmail was the safest. I did have EMT seized once but it was a 3 watch order and that was 10 years ago. Reps via anything not airmail just seems like asking for issues. Maybe buy an ebay watch or look online for special straps for your watches when you get making them extra special might be a better idea. Special strap from the states while you were waiting sounds like a good story or a nato or strap bought from a boutique while here.

The key difference here is that the TD will ship another if its seized through the mail.

Sending your own rep as you're describing, or buying M2M is a gamble you take on your own.
