Servicing Miyota movements

Hi all,

Mods, I posted this here because I don't actually have an issue with a repair, more that I wanted to gauge if people get their Miyota based reps serviced. Please feel free to move it if you think it belongs there.

Just curious if anyone bothers getting these reps serviced? I do with my rolex clone movements, don't with asian ETAs unless they start crapping out. What's the general feeling here? My local smith hasn't worked on one modified to look gen, but that's just the rotor if I'm correct. He said Miyota's are tough as nails and will likely tick longer than my heart if they're not banged around too much.

Does anyone bother with this?

Thanks in advance.

You do not say which movement , so I am thinking 8215.

This is not an expensive movement, so I would guess replacement would be more common than servicing. Personally, I would tend to take any non functional Miyota apart as a learning exercise. If i can fix it great, if not I would replace it with a new one and keep the parts as spares.

Others may differ, but I don't think regular servicing would be a thing with 8215 Miyotas.

Yeah, that's the movement I'm referring to and sorry for not mentioning that. I figured that the service would be more costly than the cost of a new movement. Good suggestion about using it to gain an understanding of movements. That's next on the agenda. Pulling a few cheap movements apart.

If you have a watch you really like with a Miyota 8215 then I could see servicing it would make perfect sense. I only have a few cheap Ali Express Miyota watches and that movement seems to last forever. Most of my reps are Asian 2824s or 2836s, some replaced with Swiss eta movements. Those I will have serviced for sure.

One other thing. I assume your movements are decorated 8215 Miyotas. There will be watch smiths who will not want to work on those. So, servicing may be difficult to find.

The Miyota 9015 costs anywhere from $77.00 to $120.00, so it's a low-cost movement. It is more likely cheaper to replace than to service, depending of the service cost. If the old 9015 has an engraved rotor or other parts which you want to retain, ask the watchmaker to see if it is feasible without affecting function.

Just my opinion.

I have heard the outfit at Timefactor (the ones that remakes the old smiths watches) switched from ETA 2824 to Miyotas due to the stats showing they fail less often and reduced return rates.
