Scratching The Gold Itch

For a few months now I've been desperately trying to convince myself I don't need a gold watch. Up until recently I thought that gold watches looked a little bit dated nowadays, even my Dad favours his rep stainless steel GMTII over his two-tone Seiko. But recently I've been really considering one. If money was no object then I'd definitely go with an Everrose Daytona, but unfortunately the rep movement isn't too reliable and the watch would probably stop altogether long before the gold plating had a chance to wear off.

So I've been considering an all-gold GMTII, specifically the 21j. Not only is it quite cheap (which would mean if my gold fetish were to suddenly disappear I wouldn't be too out of pocket), but the movement seems pretty reliable.

I've read a lot about gold plated reps here, how some people steer well clear of them and others say they've had no problems. Is a gold rep really such a bad idea? Are there any gold reps you'd recommend over the GMTII? If, heaven forbid, the gold was to wear off in record time, is electroplating a viable option with a rep? Any help/suggestions/opinions/comments very welcome!

I got the gold fetish too, got a GMTII TT w/2836GMT modded. I really like it. the only complaint i had was the color of the bezel paint, but i was able to mix up the right color to match the gen. The lume was really shooty on mine, so its in the line to get a relume. The watch has been torn down since the day i got it so no really wrist time, but i was like you and wasnt sure if I was gonna like it, but after getting one, I decided to go into it and make it right.

I dont think youll be disappointed with your urge!

That is a wicked watch Q5. Not sure how the rep stacks up. The biggest tell with Gold watches is the weight. If ever hold a GEN , it will weigh a lot more than the rep.

I really like that PO! See, my gold lust has rid me of any taste or decency. Actually, does anyone know if a sec@9 Daytona exists in gold or rose gold?

Well...I have the eact GMT-IIc you´re talking about, and it´s definitely an eye-catcher!

Although I would like to have the Green Dial "Anniversary" edition of it too, I couldn´t find any locally, so I set for the black dial version instead anyway.
But one day I´ll get the Green Dial too.
Lemme fire the D-SLR later on and I´ll post some more pics of the Gold collection of mine..

But just to mention, I also have the Everose Daytona, just in case

IF YOU CAN ONLY HAVE ONE "GOLD" WATCH THIS IS THE ONE TO OWN. OH AND BTW IT'S A GEN IF YOU MUST ASK.

Full Gold watches are not for me, they are just "too much".

Well, that was what I was thinking some time ago. Than I bought a full gold plated gen, a cheap model, just for a test. That changed my mind, and now one of my favorite gen is a gold plated vintage. I'm newbie for reps, but I'll probably try to see how is quality of gold plated reps one of these days... :)

Spirit, I think it's fair to say I'm incredibly jealous of those two watches! That Daytona is absolutely stunning. I know for some people it's a bit much, but I almost think that's the point of full-gold Rolexes, they're supposed to grab your attention. About the GMT, have you had any issues with the gold plating coming off? I read in another thread you really take care of your reps, so it hasn't really had a chance for any hardcore wear and tear, but what are your opinions on the watch in general - could it survive a couple of days a week wear?

If that Bieber watch came on a bracelet I'd be first in line!

Well, thanks to Spirit and his photos, I've just placed my order for the all-gold GMT. As I'll be keeping it for special occasions, I've ordered a white Explorer for daily wear too :D
