My recommendation would be to fold the excess tape first (just enough so that it is long enough to fit through the second eyelet) and only then push it through the second eyelet. Can be a bit fiddly, but then it looks a little narrower and more elegant.

*by tape I mean the strap, and by eyelet I mean the metal ring. Damn translator...
