Reselling on consignment?

Hi, Does anyone know anybody that would lists and sells reps on consignment? I've got a lot of reps, all in like new or almost like new condition. They're all good reps - VSF, Clean, etc., no shitters. Over 30 watches in total. I just want to cull the herd and bring it down to a reasonable sized collection. Any help here would be awesome. Thanks! I'm not very techie, and I'd be happy to pay someone (30%?) to list them and not have to pay me until they complete the sales.

Just to be clear - I'm not looking to sell watches in a bunch of listings, one at a time. I'm looking for someone that I could pay a commission to, where I'd send all the watches, and they'd sell them one at a time. I don't know if there are any sellers that do this, but I thought I'd put it out there and ask.

It would take a special member to be willing to do that as it's a big ask, Even if someone's willing to take a commission and do the sales for you. I would also definitely have a moderator or administrator approve any such arrangement. What I can tell you for sure is you would have to ship all of the watches to the seller as they would have to have them in hand for the sale, and then after the sale is complete, they would give you your portion of the money. Basically they would be responsible for every aspect of the sale. If you find someone who would do this, I would make the following suggestions. Only consider such arrangement with a long-standing member with a high post count who's had many sales of their own without issue. I could completely see someone creating a new account and trying to sucker you into selling sending your entire collection to them and then ghosting you. You would probably be wise to only do a couple at a time until you're sure and confident in said member.

I should also state that I'm not 100% sure this would be allowed by the form rules, so you probably want to message an administrator and see if this arrangement is even something that would be allowed

YOU and only you can sell a watch in M2M, not someone else on your behalf and you would have to be Certified to do so. If you want to sell them then you will have to take the time out of your day to list the watches and go through the whole process.

Here is a link to M2M sales rules.

Thanks. I'd be fine with shipping all of them to a known person. I'm also kinda wondering if this is a thing in this hobby. My other hobby, tobacco pipes, has several great resellers that will sell pipes for you on consignment for a commission, through eBay. After messaging with another member, I'm not sure if there are any guys taking commissions to sell reps, like I'm looking for. I'm not super techie, and also don't want to mess around with so many listings, so if there is anyone that could handle this, paying them a percentage is worth it to me.

While your intentions might be innocent the post in general smells like a Nigerian Prince fishing scam, can't imagine this gets much traction.

If I send someone a box of watches and don't expect to be paid until after he sells them, the only guy vulnerable to getting scammed is me. Or am I missing something?

Hey @RonaldF, You're definitely ambitious with this collection of reps, it sounds like you've got a mini boutique on your hands! While outsourcing the sales sounds convenient, it's a bit of a unicorn hunt in this hobby. Unlike other niches like pipes (great comparison, by the way), consignment for reps isn't really a thing, mostly due to trust and forum rules. Selling here is a DIY gig, listing them yourself one at a time is the name of the game.
That said, if you're dead set on finding someone, follow @Rx4Time's sage advice: only work with a long-standing, reputable member with moderator oversight. But honestly, why not tackle it yourself? It's not too tricky once you get the hang of it, and you'll keep that 30% commission in your own pocket. Plus, you’ll get to interact with buyers who share your passion, always a bonus!
Good luck culling the herd, sounds like a fun (and profitable) project!

Thanks for your response and the others...looks like I'm looking for something that doesn't exist in the world of reps.

I hear you and agree but its just not how business usually goes here. As said above, sell a couple yourself build a name and the rest of the sales will go smooth and easy, no reason to give away what could be thousands of dollars for what's just a few minutes of posting and shipping.

With that said, it would definitely a cool endeavour for someone to start. I just don't see it popping up anytime soon.

The problem or at least one problem is whoever you send these to you would first need to send documentation of the original purchase and they would have to take a bit of time to do their best to vet that what it is presented as is what it really is. There are so many different makers and variations in addition to the no name smaller makers. Also you run into issues like for example with clean where there are fake clean Submariners that are made with the clean case set but then utilize other components.

I'm not saying that this is an endeavor that interests me but if you were to send me a group of watches, I would probably end up wasting an hour or more just trying to verify every aspect of the watch to be sure it's consistent with known flaws and serial numbers, clasp numbers, etc. I would also test the watch out to make sure it's winding smoothly, running correctly and has good power reserve. I would basically do the same treatment that I would do for any of my own collection that I sell which would include timeographer readings, pressure test where applicable, verifying it has acceptable power reserve, etc. I strongly urge you that if you are considering this course still to not send your entire collection at one time. Send a couple of watches and see how it goes. Then you can send the balance once you've had a couple of positive sales.

As has been mentioned, you would probably be better off listing a couple at a time until you get the hang of selling, and then you can expand the number you're listing. Of course you would need to become certified and you would need to become a supporting member in order to list your watches beyond one at a time

Let me ask you this. Are you concerned you may have difficulties selling them because your status is so new?

I'd rather we not speak in hypotheticals on this, we might be digging into unknown ground that we do not want to harbor by setting hypothetical precedents with this thread.

You could get certified, and list them all in one posting for 30% less than you expected to sell them for. I'm sure there are people here who would be interested in a big purchase like that. Of course, it would require high price approval and all the other steps but you might be able to do it one and done and get to the same outcome as consignment.

And they would have to be mostly stainless, I don't think 30 gold-plated watches would fly...

Hypothetically speaking and I am by no means an expert or have any authority. and I wouldn't be the dude who buys 30 reps at once... so I have no idea what I'm talking about....

No, not because of my status. It would just be quick and easy. Looks like I’ll have to do it myself. Again, this is a pretty common thing to be able to do in some other collecibles hobbies. Just thought I’d ask. Didn’t mean to aggravate everyone. If mods see this, you can lock this thread. Cheers! And thanks, all.

There's also a bit of legal risk if you are in the US right? so I don't think consignment would be a thing in this situation. #Not a Lawyer and are we allowed to say things like this?

Not a fluf post so that I can qualify to sell my own reps....

I don't believe you've aggravated anyone. At least I'm not aggravated. It's just not something I've seen done on scale before and I'm not sure it's if it would be officially allowed
