Rep/Gen, Gen/Rep: The Dilemma

How many of you guys face the dilemma?

I love my LHD. But when I'm doing dirty work I strap on the rep (V6F). When I go out, on goes the gen. I can honestly say that the rep is close enough to the gen that it takes a really close look or touch to discern one from the other, and only if you know what you're looking for. They wear and keep time almost identically.

When I'm wearing the rep, I feel like I'm cheating and should just wear the gen. It also makes me wonder if I really love the look, Tudor's reputation and heritage, or a fluid combination of the two.

Anyone else out there for whom reps aren't such a simple thing? And I don't mean the masterful modders. Just the guys who wear watches.

Well, it was bound to happen. I had both watches out on my desk and when I went out, I grabbed what I thought was the gen but when I got back, I noticed the time was off from what I set against the atomic clock yesterday. First impulse was "what the eff's going on with my LHD?" Then when I took it off to swing-wind it, the louder rotor sound made me realize that I had been wearing the rep all afternoon. I hadn't set the rep against the atomic.

this is why if i have the rep of one of my gens, i keep it in a different place. especially with the level some of these reps are at.

That's pretty amazing you can mistake the rep for the gen and only until you shake it to hear the rotor sound did it make you realize.

Can you tell with the difference with the lume? I read here that the colors were different on the bezel to the Dial. Is that true?

Yes. Two things about the lume. First, it is much less powerful than gen. Second, as others have noted, the dial and bezel lume are different shades.
What is the practical effect of these two factors?
In the daylight - absolutely no matter (meaning for you and the world, it's indistinguishable from gen)
In the dark - easy tell (meaning you will be able tell)

Here is a series of photos taken after exposure to a bright light. Use it only for comparing the relative brightness of the two and the color tint. Taken right away, 10 seconds, 60 seconds after charging, approximately.

Gen on left, rep on right.

I see tonnes of posts from you with such claims (always the new version...), what is the source of your information? I haven't heard a word of new version Pelagos (fork ZF or kw...)

@Repworld any idea roughly when it will be released? Looking to pull the trigger on a blue pelagos but if a new one is in the pipe line i may aswell wait. Are we talking this year? Or just how long is a piece of string?

Thanks for sharing.

Always good to hear first hand experiences from someone who has both Gen and rep.

I think it's only natural the reps can't be 100% correct, but especially the Pelagos, is really close.
I had the black bersion and loved it. I had the chance of handling a gen one and it felt very close (except for the movement feel).
I traded it only to get a montecarlo, which is far from 1:1 but it puts a smile on my face, which I think is what matters

I enjoy having the Gen of a rep that is well repped, but I would find it frustrating to have bough a gen for which there is a super rep.

Thus, I would not buy a gen Pelagos but I would buy any gen Navitimer.

My pleasure. A rep, after all is said and done, is a watch and as such, it's something that we should be able to enjoy on that basis alone. I would love to read more about the experiences of owners of both gens and their reps, no matter the quality. There's a psychology there that I find interesting. A dynamic that drives a different portion of the membership here.

As much as I respect the values and work that goes into hand-creating a one-off $2,000+ super rep, the dedication and skills elude me. And so I just enjoy wearing what I can get and mod with a minimum of tinkering. As you said, it brings a smile to my face. When that smile fades, it's time to move on.

I can certainly understand that. I'd love to pick up a BPFF rep. I just love the look of the thing. I couldn't afford the gen. But a great SD4K rep...well, that just increases my appreciation for the work that went into the design and creation of the rep. Might even induce me to buy one on the secondary market some day.
