More likely that poor shmuck got suckered into buying what he thought was a gen Fiddy and in reality it's only a gen E series movement.

Once again a fool and their money are soon parted. NO WAY I would spend anywhere close to $10K without verifying that it is legit.

I love this site. And the people here are great. But that said, I'm sure there are people out there selling REPs as the GEN article and I feel bad for the people who bit and bit hard. Those unscrupulous sellers better watch their backs.....

Well, I feel for the guy too but not as much as you guys.

One should only buy when 100% sure of what he is buying. I am sure that somewhere along the buying process alarms should have gone off on his head and he chose to ignore them. Paperwork, detailed photos, certificate of authenticity from Panerai (you can get these "easily"), etc...

So if he paid $10K for that (you do NOT know he did) I'm sure he learned his lesson the hard way. Old school.

At least the guy got a gen movement out of the deal, and that's 75% of the way home right there. A case is a case is a case provided that the fit and finish are equal. If the dial/hands are gen too (and from looking at them, they could be), the overall quality compared to a real Fiddy probably isn't far off. Doesn't make it right, though...

As a rule of thumb, movement is considered 50% of the complete watch.

That is one tough site. Good thing I stay with my timezone homeies when talking about my gens.

Ah, yes, but in the rep world, it's much easier to find "correct" dials and hands, or much easier to make them "correct") than it is movments. A Davidsen dial and hands set are pretty spot on for a Fiddy, if they were put in a gen case w/ gen movement, you'd never get called out.

I do, however, concede your point in *most* cases the movement is half of the whole product.

Given a chance to look at the movement, we are opening ourselves to possibilities to detect whether a watch is fake.

True, very true. However, his "taking this offline" and PM'ing the dude who said it's a rep lead me to visions of a PM saying something to the effect of "You gotta be kidding me! What makes you think this is a rep? I just spent $9xxx on this thing and it's a fake?!?!?!?!"

I don't know that, I'm just guessing.

And I don't feel bad for the guy a bit. Like P.T. Barnum said "There's a sucker born every minute". Unless you're buying from an AD, make sure you know what you're getting...

Too bad the dial wouldn't fit without modification, you mean.

Yes, I suppose. However, we're dealing with a watch that's been modified already here -- a gen E movement has been installed. If he had a gen or 1:1 Fiddy case, I'm sure he would've used that too (whoever it is that built the watch).
