One should only buy when 100% sure of what he is buying. I am sure that somewhere along the buying process alarms should have gone off on his head and he chose to ignore them. Paperwork, detailed photos, certificate of authenticity from Panerai (you can get these "easily"), etc...
So if he paid $10K for that (you do NOT know he did) I'm sure he learned his lesson the hard way. Old school.
