Thought I'd detail a complete novices build on a Tudor 9411/0 using Raffles parts, which was heavily influenced by 369mafias and Singapore9s threads.

This is my first build so hopefully themistakes I've made along the way can help others if they want to build a similar watch and avoid my mistakes!

To start off I ordered...

Raffles 1680 Case
Raffles 9411/0 Snowflake Dial
Raffles Snowflake Handset
Raffles Tudor Oyster Bracelet
Miuksi PT5000 Movement

So the parts from Raffles turned up first and I noticed that the bezel insert was horribly chipped on the inside edges between the 12 and 3 markers, I thought that this would be a good excuse to attempt some bezel insert fading whilst I asked Raffles for a replacement.

So that meant the bezel needed to be popped off, which after watching a few videos looked easy enough...

Unfortunately I somehow managed to damage both the seal and the retaining spring in the process...

So another few bits to add to my next order from Raffles I thought.

I then faded the bezel insert in some blue tinted bleach based bog cleaner, which unforuntely was a little too strong and stripped most of the colour off the bezel in mere seconds - which resulted in a bit too much fade and some smudging from me touching the face whilst removing it from the bleach.

The dial I aged by putting it in the oven for about an hour at around 160 degrees C, I am happy with the level of age given from this method as I didn't want to go too far.

I tried to age the hands by putting them in the oven at a higher heat, but they absolutely refused to yellow even a little even after 2hrs at 200 degrees.
So I made a concoction of coffee and turmeric and applied these onto the hands and then baked in the oven at 200 degrees for around 20 minutes.

By sheer dumb luck this actually provided a very similar aged look to the dial face.

I then attempted some crown guard shaping using some needle nosed files to more closely match the genuine crown guards.

Here's halfway through doing one - the small scratches will be dealt with later once I've ordered a dremel for some touching up.

Next the movement turned up, so I attempted to install this along with the hands.

My first mistake was thinking that the dial spacer was the small metal ring that came with the Raffles case, which after installing between the dial and the movement left me with almost zero of the center wheel poking through the dial face.

I then removed this and reinstalled the dial to the movement without a spacer, as it looked like it didn't need it - the date wheel changed freely.

I then installed the hands with much swearing and hand shaking - hour hand was easy enough, but the minutes hand was a complete pig.

After getting all three hands on, I made sure that the watch ran - and it did. For less than a minute...

Upon closer inspection, the seconds hand was snagging on the minute hand - so off the minute hand comes again!

10 minutes later, all hands back on with much gap checking - we have a running watch!

Next was trimming the stem to fit the case, removing all the bloody cat hair from inside the case with Rodico and send an email to Raffles asking for a new bezel insert and a replacement gasket and spring.

A few days later much to my excitement, my free replacement parts from Raffles turned up.

And the bezel insert is the wrong colour...

So I whacked the bracelet on and had a look at both of the bezel inserts in the sunlight, the 'wrong' blue is nice but certainly doesn't suit the watch in my opinion and the original faded dial is a little too faded in my opinion - so I will definitely be on the lookout for a replacement insert to faded 'just a little bit'

Hopefully these links work as they wouldn't embed, but here are some wrist rolls of the first finished attempts with the different bezel inserts.

Next steps will be:
Anthaya 702 Crown
More case shaping
New bezel insert - any recommendations?
Blue Nato strap

Overall, it was an enjoyable first build - I've learnt quite a bit and will be attempting a few others down the line once my imminent house move and first child arrival has happened!

I've been telling my family I am an inspiration for years and they never believed me! :ROFLMAO:

Great thread! Love it! Brilliant inspiration for other first timers 🥰

This is exactly what is meant to happen when you build your first REP... you damage things, learn... you get good... and then you spend GEN money building Viet-parts REPs :ROFLMAO:

IMHO - there really aren't any 'correct' blue inserts, outside of CAC and even they are not right for an early 9411 build but don't let that deter you; just pick something you like, practice your aging and create the perfect insert for you!

A Jensen (Phong's son) insert is probably the next step, before CAC... but at a price point that will probably make you wince if you want to age it yourself, albeit he also does a faded version: https://www.ebay.com/str/vintagewat...at=46849624012&_trksid=p4429486.m3561.l170197

A black 9411 REP is probably the easiest place to start out with as you can get an interesting insert out of the box (e.g. Lobtime) or even stretch to a GEN service from ~$125 or so.

There is only so far you can go with the Raffles set up and wire bezels... the next step is probably going with a JKF as a base and getting into 26mm dials, Clark's bezel assemblies, swapping in Athaya crowns, BV dials (26mm) and alike. Then you can move to an HR or Milk case, Chad dial, etc. and onto the higher end Viet stuff!

Bracelets... I am GEN or NATO. Are there good/correct folded link bracelets out there? If there are, they seem to be getting on for (poor condition) GEN money e.g. https://www.ebay.com/itm/305695799835

I have a some parts coming up for sale (when I get round to certifying myself), you can have a look at, after I give my Tudor brother 369 first refusal... but work is a nightmare so haven't taken any pics... but I will this weekend (he says). At least 3 dials (26mm), Athaya 702, an insert or two, acrylic pips... Probably some other stuff; I need to rummage in the drawer!

Holy crap, man! Is that really your first build? That is damn impressive. Your write up was also excellent... especially loved the details coupled with the humor.
You need a new crown to fit the rest of the build though, glad you have one planned.
Amazing work there.

Thanks for your expert level knowledge again!

I get hyper focused whenever I start a new hobby, so I'll probably be onto the Viet stuff in no time 😅

The raffles bracelet doesn't feel great, but I do know the older style bracelets feel a lot cheaper than the new style either way, so a Nato will definitely be the next purchase.

Thanks for your kind words! I tend to do a tonne of research before tackling a new hobby and just like tinkering with anything mechanical, so thought I'd turn my hand to this.

The Raffles crown is certainly far from gen and is definitely an eyesore 🤣

GEN 703 crowns seem to be 10 a penny, in ebay auctions, from Fiery Gems and alike, if you have the right tube. Probably not a lot more money than an Athaya set up!

Blue inserts (or even just the pip) are the usual quick tells on T-Subs, which is why I favour a black REP, even if blue is what the heart wants! The Clark 5513 bezel set offers a cheap way into a pretty GEN-spec (and definitely GEN-like) bezel setup. Sternkreuz crystals are so cheap, etc. you can really get a very presentable watch for quite low money.

I just want Raffles to update their 5513 case for the 26mm dial, so we have some better value cases!

Nice build, especially for your first time. Congrats.

I am really impressed with the results for your dial and hands.
That is the ideal toasted almond color achieved on the dial I am defiantly going to try that on my next Tudor build. (have a 9401 planned )

Ive thought about the staining properties of Tumeric but have not gotten around to trying it. however Id say you nailed a near perfect match to the dial using this technique. so spicy!! 🌶️

I usually use a diluted air brush paint for my lume aging, but I like how the oven faded the blue. it looks great. I usually use a white weathering paint on my dial to give it a faded aged look.

I am still quite pleased with my eletric blue insert .
I got it from aliexpress cheap so if you screw up , nbd. buy a couple at a time.
ive ordered a few more to see what I can achieve with this insert. its always a surprise seeing how the pigments change with time in bleach.

again, nice job on the build. keep it up!!

Will definitely order a few of those bezel inserts to experiment with for that price!

I am very tempted to do a milsub next after reading your other thread...

Wore the Raffles bracelet for a day and I can't stand how cheap if feels, so it will be coming off and not going back on 🤣

I'm still loving that blue insert too! Had to order 2-3 for myself just try out for fun. For me, it's rare to get a blue insert to come out how I like it unless I want a ghost gray. Yours looks awesome and still has plenty of color... hopefully I can get something similar 🤞

No real updates, apart from a new strap which feels SO much better than the Raffles bracelet.

I also tried some standard Bleach on tbe bright blue bezel insert and it came out... Purple?!

Will await the Ali express inserts and then try some more cunning techniques to get a more acceptable blue tone that I can live with.

Also , If it wasnt meantioned ealier, a phong insert or gen spec bezel assembly wont fit the rafles case. both size and mounting .

That purple out of the raffles insert is pretty wild. Ive gotten a dusty violet a few times. but never a bright purple like that
