Guns! Guns! Guns!

Do you have this problem?

My gf refuses to let me carry my firearm with me anywhere. I do have a VALID carry permit and carry wherever I go. Is it just me or is this unfair of her to ask? Or rather, DEMAND.

Because I want to for my personal protection as well as others protection. I legally have the right to carry with my carry permit also.

Sounds like you and the gf have very different viewpoints. And probably not only related to guns. This will only be accentuated and create resentments over time.
Perhaps a new gf is in order?

I say carry. Tell her that it's not fair for her to try to change who you are. How would she like it if you DEMAND she get bigger boobs? Same thing. She either loves and accepts you as you are, or she's the wrong one.

Good luck and aim well.

why doesnt she want you to?

I would ask her and let her know this is for both of yours protection. Just let her know that you feel safer and better when you carry.

I live in Illinois where conceal and carry is illegal along with Wisconsin, but If they pass the law ever, as they are desperately trying, I would take all the required training to obtain a permit. But to be honest I would only carry a weapon a fraction of the time according to where I was going. Movies, shopping, bars etc. etc. I wouldn't feel compelled to carry a gun. I know crime can come from anywhere and everywhere, but I just feel that there is a time and place for everything. It is your right to carry so that is completely up to you. If I were going out drinking I would definitely not carry a gun as I would hate to make a poor judgement call in a situation that could have been remedied with out the use of a weapon. Even if my drunkass gets whooped. Jurors don't take nicely to gun toting boozers either. Not saying you would Bruce, as you may not even drink, but there are a lot of wannabe cowboys in those bars. My girlfriend would feel the same as yours. WOMEN! Haha!

When I go to a restaurant that serves alcohol I don't drink when I carry. Also, if I want to drink I leave the firearm at home. I obey all of the laws regarding the Carrying of my handgun. No government buildings etc.... I don't care if it's concealed or shown to be honest..... It's on my right hip on my belt. I usually throw ny shirt over it but if the shirt comes up oh well.

I've got to ask... Why carry your gun to dinner ?

Do you live in a rough part of town?
...

If it's a safety concern - could you substitute the gun with a tactical knife?

I'm actually quite a good shot. Qualified sharpshooter and all.. (with rifles not hand guns).
Obviously we can't walk around with our rifles, so I've never given much thought to the idea of carrying around a firearm during my regular day..

Yeah I really wish that Illinois would pass these laws as well. I'm afraid if they do it will be quite a bit harder for awhile to get special permit. I was going to move to Colorado about a year ago and I had looked into their laws regarding C&C. It sounded like any good citizen could apply for permit without to much hassle with firearm training etc. There are times that I would definitely want to holster a weapon, but unfortunately we have to have our guns in lock boxes with the clips out of the gun when traveling from home to range etc. Doesn't do us a whole lot of good to protect ourselves. It would be nice if the criminals didn't have the upper hand, as they don't care if they break the law as long as they don't get caught. It would make them think twice if they had to fear theirs asses getting shot. Very frustrating as it has been proven that states that went to C&C have had significant drops in crime over the years. Very frustrating! Wear in good health and enjoy your right to bear arms.

Border states aside, the states with cc laws typically have the lowest crime and gun crime rates.

As for why carry? Because the criminals do.
Killeen Texas @12 years ago: gunman crashes car into cafeteria, then starts shooting. No one there to take him down. Keeps shooting until over a dozen are dead.
Even the crazy "Non-Islam influenced" Air Force psychiatrist at Ft Hood a few years ago could have been stopped quickly if our TRAINED SOLDIERS were allowed to bear arms while at work. On a military base.
Since Texas has had a cc law, there has not been a single reported incident of a cc permit holder doing the wrong thing.
It works. Our founding fathers knew it worked, and that's why we are guaranteed the right to bear arms. It's right there in the Constitution. No, really... go look.

Remember a number of years ago when they had all of those car jackings in Florida?

After Florida passed a CCW law, the bad guys started hanging out at the airports to try and do their car jackings because they knew the tourists wouldn't be armed....unlike the "locals".

That speaks volumes IMHO.

As per a suggestion We went to the range this morning and let her shoot my Phoenix 22 as well as the Taurus. She is more comfortable with it now and wants to go back for practice so she can get her carry permit as well! She wants my phoenix now!

And to the question about why I carry: Because I feel the need to protect myself, or anyone else who may come into contact with an irresponsible gunowner(criminal) threatening their life or mine. I would NOT hesitate to fire my weapon if the situation got to that point. Basically I have carried a handgun for going on 4 years now(legally) and feel naked without just like ALL of us feel when not wearing a watch. My gun(s) are just tools that I carry with me and use when needed, just like a pocket knife. If you don't like the fact that people openly carry firearms or even conceal carry then this GUN sub-forum may not be the place for you.

No no I'm not against it - was simply asking why you carried it.

Where I'm from it would be very strange to see a guy with a gun at a nice restaurant..

I was just curious tis all.. Like I said I'm a sharpshooter, just can't lug my rifle around everywhere I go :p

I often carry my Emerson Kerambit (tactical knife, used to cut tendons rather then stab).

I carry it for much the same reasons you do. Like you I've been trained in it's uses (my old martial art used them).

Well most of the time you wouldn't see my gun as I normally conceal, but these warmer months make it a bit harder to do so. I try to only carry my phoenix 22 when going to dinner since the Taurus is a bit large for conceal when tucking in. I have no issues however, on open carry(showing my weapon on my hip on my belt) but would rather conceal simply because I do not want the attention it would bring and the fact that I don't want the public knowing I have a gun on my hip and calling the police etc every 5 mins... I frequently carry my weapon into walmart showing on my hip and do occasionally get a police officer asking to see my permit but most of the time no one even notices that I am carrying because I guess they think it's a cell phone or something on my belt.

One example: Recently stopped at a gas station to get gas. I had a .45ACP 1911 strapped to my right hip in a thumb release holster. I went inside to pre-pay and the cashier got bug-eyed. I then went back to the pumps to put the gas in and next thing I know, 2 police officers pull up behind and in front of me with their weapons drawn. I calmly told them I had a valid carry permit in my front pocket and they proceeded to take it out and check it. After that I was free to go about my business and they explained to the tenant that I was legally carrying my firearm. Turns out she filed a false report saying I was waving the gun around etc....

Yes I agree and the situation I mentioned above is the sole reason I started carrying concealed rather than open.

Absolutely a great solution taking your girlfriend to the range and getting her interested in what guns are all about. Guns save marriages(and relationships)!
