Has anyone done this? I tried searching here and rg but haven't found a tutorial... conversely if someone has a xs rubber in CONUS I'll take it and save myself the headache/wait time.

That's the best I've seen , alternatively one can purchase a small hole leather punch (forget the size, measure the width) on ebay or amazon do 2 holes and slice between them for the oval , does the job , looks ok ish with practice but the example above looks great ... He has steady hands

I done this with a leather strap but rubber should be no different. It's easy, place the punch in the right place and a couple taps with a hammer and straight through. Just need to get the correct punch.

Get an "oval punch" (from any leathercraft store ).

Size: 7mm x 2mm (from memory)

Here's mine:

I did it with a scalpel, torx tip screwdriver, and the nail file attachment nail clippers have. Came out perfectly

Can you illustrate how you did it? :) On a related note, I wonder if this approach can be used on leather straps, although I imagine hornback would be almost impossible.

Get a proper oval punch like the one mech500 showed, they're very cheap and will cleanly punch through in one go. There's the danger of slipping all too easily with scalpel blades and once you make a hash of it you'll always regret it!!

Agreed, I only used a scalpel because I’m trained with one. Steady hands.
