"Production Over-run pieces from OEM Factory" - What is this?

So I've taken a glance at the website of Trusty Time / Andrew. I know this dealer is not a trusted dealer here and I do not mean to recommend buying from him. I just like browsing his site for reps because he has a huge range of reps. But that's not what I'm intending to address here. I just stumbled upon something which caused a little confusion to me: In the prescription of this versace it is claimed that the watch is a "production over-run piece from OEM-factory", apparently meaning, by what I'm concluding, that this somehow a gen, or what? Why the heck would Versace give their over run products to a chinese replica vendor? Like, most luxury manufacturers don't even really like their products to be sold by outlet centers, because it will decrease the perceived value of the brand. I've always considered this a choice of last resort by the manufacturers, but I can't believe they'd very directly support an industry which they would say hurts their business by trillions of bucks each year...

So, what is this all about? Could there literally be a 'mole' of the luxury industry selling over run products to rep dealers? Or is it just a plain lie? I'd tend to believe the latter, but I'm not an insider here.

I'm very curious of what you guys think. And by the way, I tried to find something about this using the search engine, but could not find anything...

If it's plain marketing BS, as you're calling it, that would mean it is a lie. Considering Andrew used to be a TD and like I was told on another forum he lost his TD status for other reasons than customer scam, wouldn't that be .... at least a little surprising? :-/ And if it's just bullshit, why doesn't he claim this for other, much better selling reps like Rolexes or Breits? I'd doubt that exactly this ugly Versace is a best selling one... Or am I just being way too naive here? lol

I have see many so called Fashion watches come from China with Luxury labels on the dial. Gucci, Dior, Versace ect to name a few. If you pick thru the garbage, there are those that are really very close to the gen in all aspects and with many gen parts.

Erm not necessarily jomashop has Versace watches for around 350$ So it could be a possibility these are left over/old stock or this is just a new marketing approach. Versace watches are just fashion watches that use basic materials. I forgot where but there was a rumor going around of backdrop gens that made it out of the factories but that may have been about bags/purses.

Amazon used to have a similar model listed but not longer available.

Ok, what the OP is asking is would the gen brands, particularly Versace, sell their "overruns" to the rep industry. The answer is: not a chance in hell. Just last year, Versace finally won a SEVEN year lawsuit against a rep maker who was knocking off their products. Kering, who owns several brands including Gucci, Brioni, YSL, BV, and others, has sued Ali repeatedly. IF the gen brands had anything at all to do with the rep industry they would be cut off at the knees in courts world wide. Ever go to a rep dealer site and see one of those notices that the site has been taken down due to a lawsuit - usually filed in Florida - and including the judgment language of why the plaintiff won? IF the gen manufacturers were even remotely involved in the rep industry they wouldn't have a leg to stand on in court.

I don't think that's an issue -- the discussion varied between the 'factory overrun' label as either a marketing gimmick or a market reality of fashion watch producers using the rep industry to move inventory.

On its face, you question warrants some investigation -- as fashion watches on the whole are Chinese in origin.

However, given the legal ramifications and in the interest of brand identity (as JAFO pointed out), the likelihood of big name European brands utilizing the rep factories to liquidate product is rather low -- particularly recognizable brands like Versaci, Gucci, Prada, LV, etc.

My guess is that it's a marketing gimmick -- if it is not, then they are not the 'S-Class' versions they sell in boutiques, rather; they are the cheapo versions sold at outlet malls or off-price locales -- I.e. Armani Exchange as opposed to Le Collezione by Giorgio Armani.

Not at all, just new to the game. It's no secret that many of the luxury fashion brands now manufacture their wares in places like China. There is lots of speculation and a few exposes that items fall off the assembly lines and into the workers pockets if you will, or they have authorized items produced by day and non authorized items by night. Either way luxury brands aren't what they use to be, and plenty of the luxury brand watches are nothing but names on a cheap quartz product. Easily rep'd since they are made there and dealers are able to market them as "overstock" , but in all reality they are probably just reps of a crap product to begin with. I know a guy type situation...

Why don't you just ask the dealer directly??

If they are in fact gens they were probably sourced through the grey market and the dealer bought them from a wholesaler so not really a big mystery here.

Collision of mentalities:
Western brands will squeeze the last cent out of Chinese factories and send own supervisors over there to perform qc.
Chinese factories will neither understand why "an almost perfectly good caseset" has been refused and secondly never
really thrash it/ destroy it. Everything gets recycled, nothing gets thrown away. And nobody really wants to know what
happened to the parts, and where they will end up - as long as they get sold somehow.
Apply this to caseset factories, hand set factories, dials, crowns etc. and You have a flourishing fantasy brand (or even rep)
industry.
This is all mere speculation and never did happen.

Versace have these made in China (at least the case set, dial, hands and bracelet) and so late at night out the back door of the factory they go. The same thing happened with a bunch of Cartier pieces some time back. "Back door gens" would be a more accurate description.

Factory over run also doesn't imply Versace is aware of or condones this. Maybe Versace ordered 1,000 pieces, factory produced 1,200 to ensure they'd have at least 1,000 pass QC. Factory is left with a couple hundred over runs that they aren't going to just throw away.

Over runs do happen. I have been in China for business and ran across other items that were "over run". Came home with a couple of nice sets of Callaway clubs for next to nothing.
