Problems swapping a DG4813 to a beginmariner

I have a beginmariner from Andrew with a Asian 21J. The movement conked out on me so I purchased a DG4813 from ajoesmith. Anyway, I was going to attempt the swap myself since everyone assured me that it was a direct plug and play swap. But instead I decided to let my watchsmith handle the job. Anyway he showed me today that it swapped in and the hands fit, however the stem is misalligned and not on center in the hole. Also, the date wheel is misalligned and only half shows up in the mag. So, I asked him if he could swap the datewheel and stem and he said it was unlikely but he would try. Is there any advice I can give him?

Get a new watchmaker. I did that swap and I'm relatively incompetent.

Did he use the extra spacer that came with the movement? That was because there is a very slight difference in the thickness of the two movements. If the stem is misaligned in the other plane, it's because he doesn't have the movement centered to the stem hole. That would also make the date misaligned with the cyclops.

Sounds to me like he just needs to open the back, unloosen the two retaining tabs and move the movement slightly. Are you seeing that the dial is slightly misaligned in the case? That would be the sure sign.

well the stem is misalligned in the x plane, not the y plane. It is touching the top of the stem hole. also, you can see that the date number is alligned in the x plane, straight up and centered, but the y plane is misalligned and there is a huge gap. Im not sure if a movement holder came with this.

I dunno, everyone told me the best thing to do was get a 4813 since it was 8 beats/sec and supposedly a better movement. I took the advice of the forum. Who sells replacement 21j's?

Well the 4813's are fairly cheap and they are a 28.8K movement. I've had one swapped into one of my subs and the sweep is just about the same as my ETA Rollies.

Sorry, it was the 'you can see' bit of your post that led me to think you had posted a pic that I couldn't see for some reason... :!:

The new movement came with a very thing circular spacer. It will work without fine without it. But, it was there to raise the movement up to center the stem vertically in the case if needed. If the stem is already too high in the case, I'm at a loss to help you. It's basically a simple swap if done right.

The movement holders came with the original movement.

It's been a long time since I took geometry so I'm a little confused with the x and y planes.

He's doing something wrong, I just can't tell you what.

that guy is an idiot. He said he had 15 years experience and still charged me for the swap even though he couldnt do it. He said that he chraged me for the hours he worked on it and he told me before hand that since its a rep there was no gaurantee that the swap could be done.

We're all assuming you're going from a DG 2832 to a DG 4813.

Could it be a different CN 21j movement that was originally in it?

My thought exactly. This is an easy swap if the original movement was a 2813, if it was something else it may not work. The fact that the date window doesn't line up leads me to believe that they are different, as the 2813 & 4813 have the window in the same place.

I'm pretty sure I read a thread a while back by a Spanish guy who did the same swap on a 'noob' Sub and he had to swap the dw overlay to get it to line up...

I spoke to Bk about this very issue - seeing as I am currently in the process of doing the same thing.
He suggested that the date wheel be taken of the old movement and glued onto the new one.
Thus eliminating any misalignment and the likes.
Takes 5 min to do, but saves any future hassle.

No problem.

Tutorial thanks to SSSurfer on RWG, who was smart enough to download it back when the pictures were up.
