Problem with panerai buckle.....

Hi guys

I just bought a beautiful gen panerai strap, i love it. Only problem is the holes on strap are round and not oval like the majority of Pam straps and none of my buckles will work

Is there a rep buckle out there that would work? I could easily find a plain buckle but I would much rather one with panerai markings if possible..... if anyone can give me pointers I can ask a td for one

I can't upload pics at the moment but it's very similar to this strap for sale on eBay

https://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/MP-Pro-Ori...614202?hash=item25c75df7ba:g:QoEAAOSwDk5Ttnys

Thanks

Actually, the width of the tongue on that GPF-mod buckle in the ebay picture you shared is a bit larger than that on the rep (and gen) Panerai buckle. So I'm puzzled as to what buckles you would have that wouldn't fit a gen Panerai strap. Before recommending any buckles, we would need to see what your buckles are. A picture of the strap would also be helpful as well as the measurement of the holes on the strap.

I don't have a picture sharing account to upload pics here. I must do that.....

I was puzzled also but the strap doesn't look like a rep imo. I got it cheap as its pre owned, even if it's not gen I don't mind as I love it and the colour is perfect but it seems way too good quality for a rep. The stitching is arrow straight on both sides, the logo is correct font on the rear, the quality of the leather is beautiful. Better than my other gens I've had actually.
I can usually spot a rep strap immediately.

The round holes are approx 2.5mm wide where as all my other straps have an oval hole approx 4mm x 2mm. All my current buckles just suit this oval hole. It's a 26mm strap tapering to a 22mm

Is there a common 22mm rep buckle out there for a 2.5mm hole?

Thanks again mysterio, you are always a wealth of knowledge on panerai!

You don't need an account for PixelsBin.com, tinypic.com or imgur.com. Easy peasy enough to upload pictures there.

I have not come across any modern gen Panerai strap with round holes. All of them have oval holes. I'm kind of doubtful that is a gen OEM Panerai strap. But once you can upload a picture of it we can say more.

I have measured the sewn in GPF-mod dep buckle on my 26/26mm Corrigia strap and the tongue width is 3.8mm. The tongue on my 22mm Panerai signed buckle for a 44mm PAM is 4mm. So I don't expect the tongue to get any smaller than that. My only remaining guess is the Ardillon buckle which I don't have but it would look so weird on a 26mm wide strap. Also leather is pretty forgiving. My aforementioned 26mm Corrigia strap has circular holes that are probably 2.5mm in diameter. Yes the tongue on the sewn in buckle that it comes with is 3.8mm. And it does not look like the hole is getting any bigger after wearing it on a few 47mm PAMs for more than a month.

It's definitely a strap I'm scratching my head about. It's got a much wider keeper than normal but of way higher quality of any rep I've seen. I will try and sort pictures

Hopefully pics have worked? As I said it's a used strap, most of the wear showing on the back

If this is a rep can you tell me from what maker please as I want more of them!

Any thoughts on what buckle would work?

I might be wrong, but the keeper is nothing like what I see on OEM Panerai straps. Might be actual leather, but it's masquerading as Panerai made strap. The second and third to the last holes appear to have been used with a buckle that's larger than the holes, probably a standard 22mm signed buckle with the 4mm tongue.

I originally thought it may be a rep but when it arrived the quality and finish made me think otherwise. Also I've never seen a rep with correct logo font.... it's certainly not a typical Chinese rep, the difference is night and day. The strap I sent the link to on eBay makes me think it may be genuine, it's another strap for a 47mm Pam with round holes

Anyway that aside I am not really bothered but is there a buckle that would suit it better? The 4mm tongue will not go through the holes at all

Thanks

Propbably for a deployment buckle, but I don´t think Panerai has single pin deployment buckles so most likely not an OEM strap

Thanks but the leather is too thick to go through and be adjusted in a deployment clasp

Can anyone suggest a panerai buckle that would work for me in a 2.5mm hole?

Iff you find one (which I doubt) you will have too much space at the strap side of the pin. Why don´t you use this (can´t be too hard to shave some of from both sides and polish it up). Alternatively go to a leather/shoe shop and ask if they can make the holes oval, or find the tools to diy. Good luck

Does anyone have one of these? If so could you measure the width of the metal tongue for me please? It looks like the tongue it not as wide and flat as the standard Pam tang buckle and puretime says it fits 22mm end

I spoke to the person I bought it from and he's actually a watch dealer. He sells mostly vintage stuff, longines, jlc etc. Not that it matters but he insists it's 100% genuine and he said it should be with a panerai "mx" buckle.
Does anyone know if there is any rep mx buckles out there?
Thanks

Now your seller is most likely talking out of his rear end. The keeper on that strap is typically found on aftermarket (not made by Panerai) ammo leather straps. Your strap is definitely not ammo leather. Maybe you can ask him what is the Panerai part number of your strap because your friends want to buy the same strap but new. He'll probably say "Oh, this is a rare strap and it's no longer being made. I was just lucky to have gotten that strap. The previous owner is dead so I cannot ask about the strap anymore" or something to that effect. :lmao: But hey, if he produces an actual product number that we can verify, then color me embarrassed and educated at the same time.

As for his Panerai MX comment, it adds doubt to his claim on the strap. MX buckles would not pair with that strap because although the original Panerai MX buckles (identified by having Panerai and the OP logo on opposing sides of the buckle) were available in 22, 24 and 26mm sizes, they were only available as sewn-in to the strap when you bought them with the strap from Panerai.

But that info on the gen aside, there are rep MX screw-in buckles from Davidsen (I was able to purchase some from him for my PAM785 set, although on the gen PAM785 they are also sewn-in).

Thanks for that. I will go back to him about the mx being sewn in only. Looking at his sales he doesn't sell much panerai but you never know he may have some info

How would I get in touch with Davidsen, is he a member here? I don't necessarily need the mx buckle, just anything that fits. This guy has various gen 47mm straps for sale with some buckles that look like they'd work, some nice straps here if anyone is interested.....

Best to check out his TD section (called Davidsen, that's a clue. ;) ) to get his contact info.

If you check out that last thread you shared, ALL the MX buckles on there are sewn-in. And ALL the Panerai straps that have round holes are either PAV or Pre-V (Pre-Vendome) or simply not modern. Actually that seller makes me recall a member here or on one of the other rep fora.

Thanks mysterio. I'll look up Davidsen. I wasn't aware he was a td
This is the first experience I've had with panerai straps other than standard 24mm reps and gens for 44mm pams so it's a learning curve. So assuming this is a rep strap is there a good source of better quality rep straps closer to gen that have better quality stitching and correct font? The standard rep straps I can spot in an instant. For me the rep Pam watches have far better attention to detail than straps I've seen
Thanks
