It's 'cause that is a "Dry Suit", that photo was taken New Years day 2022 on Loch Duich at the rear of our house, the Loch is deep and it's effin freezing this time of year. Under the dry suit is a "wooly bear" (thermal onesie) and a padded life jacket.
It's been a tradition for the last 35+ years that myself and a few others always go out Barefootin' (and other waterski disciplines) on New Years day then adjourn to the boozer for lunch

Especially if you haven't 'footed before, happy to teach you, we always love a bit of "boom fodder" it's great to photograph the wipe outs
The good news is they don't hurt as much in sub zero temps, well not until you thaw out in the pub anyways
My last barefoot boat which I custom built from a new hull had a 250 horse V6 Yamaha Outboard that was ridiculously light and quick outta the hole.
I creatively installed an all ally big block Chevy 500ci motor in this Mastercraft we got atm, 52 mph flat out, gets to footing speed in around 5 seconds, which is 40 - 45mph depending on the weight of the skier.

Longline slalom at 42mph ....
Caught a toe crossing the wake in a competition, that one bloody hurt, my neck was clicking for a few days after ....
Tumble turn ....
