Panerai Luminor 1950 Regatta Rattrapante: The Unofficial Watch of The Expendables…
Official watches of first Expendables were Police watches, special editions with T-shirts and so on… who cares, anyway, when Sylvester Stallone was wearing Panerai everywhere on movie posters and during the movie. More than that, not only Sly but also Jason Statham and Terry Crews - were all sporting a Panerai Luminor 1950 Regatta Rattrapante watch. So, special edition of 500 pieces of PAM 332 was actually 447 for the rest of the world, or less![Wink ;) ;)](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7)
While it is discussable matter to use such expensive, somehow fragile watch in black-op missions (where Casio would do better on all fields) - the movie made this watch a hit.
The genuine has 7750-based OP XVII caliber, with rattrapante function (or split second function), DLC coating, 2 mm thick sapphire and 100m water resistance. Nice quote about the dial: "The black dial of PANERAI LUMINOR 1950 REGATTA RATTRAPANTE WATCH is adorned with a beautiful hobnail pattern. The dial is set with tachymeter scale at the periphery; two side-by-side sub-dials; as well luminous hour markers with white text; not to mention the color of the sea: blue that performs as the accents on the five minute countdown of the 30-minute counter and the central split-second chronograph’s hand." That's it.

The REP:
Since H-factory released PAM 212J, 213i and 253i in years 2010-2012, it was just only matter of time when they deliver rep PAM 332.
None of them has real flyback or rattrapante function - all carries chrono version of Asian 7750. None of them used to have sapphire, just hardened mineral glass since cost of sapphire, even in mass production, would make the rep watch price sky rocket. Cutting sapphire, remove a lot of material and then polish everything - is not cheap, even in China. Rep PAM 332 now has sapphire as an option, along with standard 'synthetic sapphire' what is just a name flick for hardened glass. In case of watches sapphire means always synthetic sapphire (material produced by the flame fusion process). It is already synthetic, human-made one. So when dealers call something synthetic sapphire, better think of rep synthetic sapphire, which is high quality glass.
I got this watch from Joshua / Perfect Clones. Being extremely happy with PAM 212J, already got used to have a rep watch which lacks function (in this case, no flyback). Always thought "missing rattrapante is just too much", so I skipped these PAM 253 for this reason. But 332 is another story - DLC, dial with hobnails pattern, bigger subdials (when comparing to 212) and sapphire(!). Jumped.
This is hell of the watch, looks so much better in DLC than 212J, just by having DLC
Really, PAM 212 looks like half-baked watch comparing to 332.
Cons:
- the crystal distortion is different than on a gen, where rep glass version is closer to gen. Sapphire introduces quite nice looking distortion but is less gen like. But I would not mind to have rep sapphire on a gen - it is such a beautiful visual experience!
- of course - no rattrapante and faux pusher at 8. You can press it, anyway
err… manual HE valve ? ![Wink ;) ;)](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7)
- typical H-factory problem - PANER AI instead of PANERAI at the bottom of dial. What the…?
- too shallow engravings on back albeit seems to be correct
- different shape of internal side of CG lever, especially that part holding roller
- REG. T.M. text is 0.5 mm too close to the edge - another H-factory WTF...
Pros:
- it is DLC! EVERYWHERE! even on screws, hexagonal part under the crown etc.
- CP's of subdials hands and chrono hand are as per gen, I suppose
- hobnail pattern looks like executed exactly as per gen
- very good superlume! it is even better that on PAM 212J. I tested it this night. It is now super-superlume while PAM 212J I would call just superlume. Keeps power much longer.
- lume dots on hour markers are put into cylinders, just as per gen
- blue color on chrono hand is just tad darker than blue on minutes totalizer, as per gen
- comparing with a lot of gen photos, arabic numbers on tachymeter are as per gen
As a watch:
- stunning looking piece
- thanks to DLC everywhere, even CG lever closes easier, due to less friction on the crown surface
- sapphire has very nice optical abilities, dial look more "intensive" while glass version (PAM 212J) looks flat and dull. It is not about more complicated dial - it is about how light penetrates crystal.
- when looking straight on the dial, due to sapphire, the tachymeter ring actually seems to be … underneath the dial, like 2 mm below. Great to observe. If it would be like that on a gen, this single effect would be rep-killer![Wink ;) ;)](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7)
