Paying with Iphone

So I'm at Starbucks in line and the guy in front of me goes to pay for his order with his iPhone, literally puts his screen to the scanner. Anyone know what "app" this? And is it safe? And accepted at most retailers??

I use it every single day. Most people I know have it. Makes my trip to Starbucks in the morning so much easier. You get rewards too.

Its gonna be a long time till I support NFC. I just don't like the idea of paying with your phone... putting all your eggs in one bucket just doesn't seem like a good idea.
