Hey Guys,

I'm on the verge of buying a Panerai, I'm looking at the 683 which is a 42mm.

Just having a final moment of paranoia about what size I should be going for?

5mm difference between 42mm and 47mm doesn't sound like a lot.

I'm 6'4 tall and 15 stone, but I've got fairly skinny arms.

Anyone got some insight that might be helpful to me?

Thank you.

42 is not a Pam for me ;)

Go for the 44 and you will have a much better idea about the other 2 sizes then.
44 is wearable for most people, it wears smaller then other brands in that size, you're not a small guy either so I think you will be ok.
Also, in 44 you have more Pam models to choose from.

Good luck and share your opinion with us when you get your first Pam, life will not be the same afterwards:)

Good advises and very true, forget about the 42mm PAM. PAM is meant to be big and bold.

Also, a 45mm Radiomir wears smaller than a 44mm Luminor.

Never had a 42mm PAM, never will. Great for women and children though, I s'pose.
Always had 47mm PAMs, never considered 44mm PAMs, until I got one and I love it. I concur with the advice given here: try 44mm as it fits 99% of the population well, and see then how you feel about 47mm. Keep in mind that traditionally these were diver's watches, all 47mm and one even 60mm in diameter. They are not dress watches, nor do they desire to be.

Guys, I really appreciate the responses. It did make me go away, do some research and thinking. I could be making a mistake, but I've decided to go against your advice and get the 42mm.

I wacthed some videos and the 42mm still looks fairly big on the wrist, bigger than Submariner.

This video did make me laugh (at 2:24):

"I'm sure there are insufferable Panerai purists who think anything smaller than an italian wall clock is orological garbage"

:ROFLMAO: I hope that doesn't offend you, it's pretty funny though.

I will come back and let you know if I made a mistake, worst case, I will flip it on here for a small lose. This will be my first Panerai, who knows, I might be one of those insufferable purists pretty quickly.

Hi, I forget to mention.......buy what you like. It is just a watch.

Look forward to your impressions on the 42mm. Likely, you will not stop at one.

I'm sure the purists will be appalled by the release of the Quaranta, with a 40mm case size, even if the watches look beautiful.

Btw, former NBA star David Robinson, at just over 7 ft, wears 44mm and 47mm PAMs.

Personally, I think you should just choose the one which you like the best and puts a smile on your face whenever you look at it on your wrist, regardless of the size and regardless of what other people say.

My first Panerai arrived:

Initial impression is that 42mm fits the wrist quite good? 44mm would have been fine too but I definitely don't think the 42mm looks too small.

Anyways, I like it. I'm already looking at the Luminors 🙈

Maybe the angle of the pic but the lugs tip to lug tip is almost the same as your wrist, 42mm is the perfect fit for you, the 44mm may also work but think the 47mm maybe too big..
To be fair, there's a lot of really good 42mm Reps out there, you've picked a great in in the 683 to start with!
Enjoy!

Late to the party but here's my two cents... I'm 6'6" and 185-190lbs.
I've had 47, 45, 44 and now two 42s... to me 47s are just not good on day to day wear, generally don't fit under shirt sleeves and catch on things. When wearing a 47mm pam you are VERY aware you're wearing a big watch.

The 44s... in my experience it depends on the model. My 243 at 44mm was awesome but I (stupidly ) sold it because I found it was kinda top heavy. That said the 1289 Blu Profundo I am wearing now is 44 and wears, imo, smaller than my 111. Prolly due to the fiddy case vs the luminor case.

The 42s... don't ever let anyone say they're for women and children. BS! I find 42 is THE sweetspot. Fully daily wearable under a dress shirt or on the beach. My 960 in carbon fibre is so so so very comfortable to wear. Sometimes I forget i have a watch on.

I think the one Sub the OP bought is a FINE choice and likely on my list to pick up next.
