Hum... interesting to see how people's views differ across the board.

Yes, compared to Chanel bags, which won't sell for much when used, Panerai watch is almost a sensible purchase.

If she likes the design, why don't you buy her an "homage" watch ? With a sterile dial, a good movement and few mods. It's not a rep (misuse of a brand name).

+1 I can't afford a gen Pam for myself or my girlfriend. Instead, last year for her birthday I made her a smaller homage of one that I had previously made for myself. That could be another option instead of buying a rep.

It depends if your partner appreciates (I mean REALLY) things you made yourself for her. You could just as well make a bag for her if you had the know how, but how much more would she love it if you bought her a Chanel or a Louis Vuitton bag? It varies from person to person.

Kudos to you for your build! I'm actually taking lessons from a local watchmaker so I can also learn the fine art of watchmaking as well.

Regarding giving an homage as a gift however, I feel it is the same as giving a replica. Possibly even worse. If someone sees my wife wearing a PAM111 V3 they most likely will think it is authentic. However is someone saw my wife wearing a sterile dial homage watch they will definitely know it is not a genuine Panerai and possibly think it was a horribly cheap knock-off. People who aren't into watch collecting don't understand the idea of "homage" watches.

If I could, I would however love to build her a watch with a custom design.

Personally I would buy her something nice as a primary gift (necklace, earings, etc.) something that she would appreciate, something that has or will create sentimental value (don't all women love that?). That way you have your grounds covered for a thoughtful gift. Then pull out a PAM 111 V3, un-modded, explain to her its a rep just like yours and hand it over.

No one is going to call her out on it unless she happens to go into a AD, letting her know it's a REP will prevent that.

I agree don't make a main gift with a replica watch

Anyway you could get a replica as a complementary gift. If you are looking for a PAM I would choose for a woman: PAM 390 (all women like this wacth, believe me) or the Boutiques Special Edition from Kuvarsit (really nice and awesome). They are more "warm" for a woman that PAm 111 or similar.

I can understand your point of view about seeing a homage as a cheap knock-off; no offense taken ;). From my experience, most non watch geeks (or whatever the polite term is) don't know what Panerai is, and usually like my homages or reps. Luckily my girlfriend likes my watch hobby, or at least doesn't mind that I spend time working on projects, and I know she appreciates hand-made things. In any case, you should do whatever you think is right, and what you think your wife will appreciate!

If you aren't already a member, you should definitely check out HF for tons of info and tutorials on building/modding watches. There are members who can definitely help you finding and making custom parts, if you are interested in doing something different. Let me know if you have any questions.
