"Best upgrade" is subjective. If you want to spend $350 on a gen part for a single rep, I would probably agree. If you want to improve a rep to a significant degree and have enough money left over to buy another rep, then a Clark's crystal with AR cyclops is the best upgrade for me.
Here are some examples
I tend to emphasize quantity over quality, as long as an acceptable minimum standard is met.The more reps you have, the harder it is to justify high dollar upgrades on any single piece.
Would a prof crystal be an acceptable alternative to gen?
I don't like AR on the outside of a crystal or cyclops. It is susceptible to scratching and can over time look worse than before it was coated. AR on the underside of a crystal or cyclops is the way to go IMO. That's how Rolex does almost all of theirs. Prof will coat how you want it.
Depends on the watch. On a ceramic sub I’d say a Spongebob insert or a good platinum mod, or a gen insert. That’s the (still) massive Achilles’ Heel of all ceramic subs. You might think it’s not, until you see a genuine one.
Title says it all.

I recently received a VSF Hulk S29. Having put the gen crystal on VSF 116610LN VSF S19, I had bought another gen crystal for the incoming Hulk... In the end, I sold the gen crystal for Hulk...
Last VSF crystals are GREAT!
Same black hole, same reflections...
Gen crystal is gen crystal, but on a rep Hulk that will NEVER have same gen dial, it's not worth it.
I would spent that money for a better insert.
And a whole bunch of edge distortion.. no they aren’t that great
