I agree it's an excellent update however, for 'me' I believe it's too expensive. It's over capitalising the asset which you rarely if ever get your money back on.
This is provided you sell it of course.

There are some factory crystals that are more than acceptable & the price difference on a Rolex crystal is just not worth it financially to 'me'.

It's all too easy to over mod/spend on a rep and the only market you can sell it too is super limited as it's only the rep crowd like us.

Again, this is how 'I' see it & no doubt others may have a different position.

BNOOTB from the factory with no more $ required is the dream............................naturally. :drinks_cheers:

"Best upgrade" is subjective. If you want to spend $350 on a gen part for a single rep, I would probably agree. If you want to improve a rep to a significant degree and have enough money left over to buy another rep, then a Clark's crystal with AR cyclops is the best upgrade for me.

Here are some examples

I tend to emphasize quantity over quality, as long as an acceptable minimum standard is met.The more reps you have, the harder it is to justify high dollar upgrades on any single piece.

Agreed, and I was talking about a single part????

Would a prof crystal be an acceptable alternative to gen?

Depends on the watch. On a ceramic sub I’d say a Spongebob insert or a good platinum mod, or a gen insert. That’s the (still) massive Achilles’ Heel of all ceramic subs. You might think it’s not, until you see a genuine one.

I don't like AR on the outside of a crystal or cyclops. It is susceptible to scratching and can over time look worse than before it was coated. AR on the underside of a crystal or cyclops is the way to go IMO. That's how Rolex does almost all of theirs. Prof will coat how you want it.

Fair point, but let me narrow my question a bit: Is there any reason to get a gen crystal over a prof crystal with underside coating only?

Pretty much this. The first thing that caught my eye in the OP wasn’t the crystal. It was the goofy reppy LV insert.

I recently received a VSF Hulk S29. Having put the gen crystal on VSF 116610LN VSF S19, I had bought another gen crystal for the incoming Hulk... In the end, I sold the gen crystal for Hulk...
Last VSF crystals are GREAT!
Same black hole, same reflections...
Gen crystal is gen crystal, but on a rep Hulk that will NEVER have same gen dial, it's not worth it.

Does anyone know if the gen crystal AR is applied under the cyclops or under the crystal?

I think one of the nice things about going gen is stored value. It seems like you can always get your money back on gen Rolex parts, provided you purchase it at a reasonable price. Maybe not the crystal, per se, but it is nice being able to know you can sell it.

I want a black hole crystal from prof, but I think I rather have a gen crystal more know it’s going to retain value.

I second this. To me, the blackhole is the first feature i notice at a distance before we even talk about the other details like date font, SEL fitment etc.
