What does it mean when people do exposure for 4 seconds or 6 seconds when taking pictures and how is that accomplished.

Depends on the camera but you have the Rebel right?

Should have a +/- Exposure mode on your camera that will allow you to control the duration of the shutter.

not like the F-stop but will allow you to capture more or less light and can also give you control on a sense of motion but be careful.

If you try to make water look silky smooth you had better choose a time in the day or a slightly cloudy day with less light.

If you don't you will over expose your photo's and they may look like nothing but white...

It's really a trial and error game and soon you will learn the proper setting for the occasion.

Pugwash are you shooting with the FinePixA204?
Only in the tutorials. Mostly I use a Panasonic DMC-FZ20 with a Hoya Polarising filter.

It's the Leica lens. That's why I chose it. The CCD is noisy, making it annoying in low light and anything above ISO100, but that brute of a lens makes up for it.

... and here was me trying to say it's not the equipment you use that matters. :D

As a rebellion against digital, my current camera is this:
http://shop.lomography.com/holga/specifications/

I'll post pics as and when I can get them developed. :D

That is one big clunk of plastic there Pug. Professional development only huh, that must take a while.

I can do the black and whites myself if I can find all my darkroom parts, but most likely I'll end up getting a local shop to sort them out. It'll take a week? Not too bad unless you're too used to digital.

A week is not bad for better quality. My roomamte in college did photography in college and he used to develop in the lab there. He dragged me sometimes to keep him company and it's very interesting process.
