Wow, that’s over one year now since the last post in this thread.
Ever since, I haven’t seen anyone post pictures of the HF 229, so I wonder if someone has bought it?
Well, I did, a couple of months back! I waited to post the pictures here until I could get a hold on a OEM navy blue strap, which I received recently, a slightly used copy previously owned by a Risti.
…and… this blue shiny little feller certainly deserves the best OEM shoes to walk on! This is a stunner of a watch!
I won’t bother you with much ramblings and this is no review – I much rather leave technical remarks to those in this forum section who are really much more knowledgable on that. Let me just leave you with a couple of general notes that I think are worth mentioning.
- The dial colour is significantly different from the HF V1 (approx 2009 I think), which is a (much) darker blue.
- Sunburst effect is as good as I have seen on any PAM with a dial like that
- My watch smith looked at the dial printing and was impressed by how near-flawless the lume had been applied
- Cyclops: I have a Noob PAM299 as well. This is considered a super rep, and probably rightfully so. It is very obvious though, that the magnification on the 229 is way more impressive (significantly bigger, on par with 346 quality IMO)
- The rep croc strap – the main reason why the watch so expensive – is a very good strap, indeed. In terms of quality definitely comparable with the OEM. However, as other people already noted, the light blue stitching deviates notably from the OEM version. Now I found that the colour is quite different, as well. The rep is more of a greenish blue. It’s a very nice colour and perhaps even more ‘navy’ than the OEM. But different it is. Just too bad you need to buy the strap with the watch – apparently very few people actually buy the combo now (same goes for PAM228 and PAM224 I guess), while I feel many actually would love to. I attached some images with both straps side by side (OEM mounted on the watch).
So all in all, I just go by ALE’s famous expression that the this watch truly has a ‘gen-like feeling’ and that for me, it’s been worth the extra money.
