Heart of Europe
I just have to shake my head seeing many repetitive posts saying things like, you have to drive a Ferrari etc, otherwise people will think your RM is fake. At the end of the day, who cares what other people think, what you drive etc. Not every wealthy person is into cars, so not every wealthy person drives an expensive car. Many watch collectors spend their money only on watches, are aficionados with extensive collections, and an RM is just part of a collection, many are small business owners who also live quite modestly because watches is their passion. If you have been around truly wealthy silent wealth, these individuals all have one thing in common, they just carry themselves differently. They don’t need to impress anyone, they don’t need to show anyone their watch, they just do what they do. When you know what to look for, it becomes very easy to distinguish these individuals. I used to work with wealthy people, many drove Fiat Abarths daily for example because they were easy to drive and incognito in the tight streets of Europe for example. One lesson I learned and read here before, never judge a book by its cover, is a well learnt lesson with people who work with UHNWI’s. The replicas are getting so good that be honest, could you really tell if the guy walking or sitting at the table is wearing a ZF??? Now if you go out to try and tell everyone and post on IG your watch and parade it around, then you just are a plain idiot and will be caught out, especially if you don’t have the characteristics and mannerisms of wealthy people. Of course I am talking about silent wealth, not show pony’s who feel the need to tell the world “i’ve got money” which seems to be the trend these days. Enjoy the RM watches, who cares, enjoy, or wear an Apple Watch.
In principle, I agree with you 100%. In my professional environment, I often meet people who could be described as ‘very rich’ and none of them flaunt any status symbols ... rather the opposite. But maybe that's a ‘German thing’, in other countries it's a bit different - especially in the Arab cultural area.
But with the very special RM watch brand, I would even make a distinction. The watches are so outrageously expensive that the probability of finding them in the collection of a ‘small business owner’ is probably close to zero. And yes, the love of RM and expensive sports cars does indeed often seem to go hand in hand ;-)
But does that bother us? Anyone who drives an old Golf or Corolla, for example, and wants their neighbours to believe that they are wearing a genuine RM probably has a completely different problem. Don't even get me started on our dear Instagram influencers with Gucci caps and clutch bags - they scream ‘fake’ anyway and no adult believes that anything on them is real.
If you absolutely want your watch (not necessarily an RM ;-)) to be considered genuine, you should - as you rightly say - not pay attention to the watch, but to yourself; and by that I don't mean clothes or car, but appearance and overall package. There are guys (also here on RWI ;-)) who could wear a Gen and everyone would think it was a Rep. Then there are guys (also here on RWI) who could wear a AAA and no one would have any doubts, he´s wearing a Gen ;-)

This. I know someone who is worth around $100M. They spend their money flying around the world always on vacation and at F1 hospitality. On the few occassions I've seen them they're rocking a white polo tee and pants and no not even quiet luxury. They own 2 cars of which one is a normal SUV otherwise they're mainly in Ubers or have a private driver. Then I see them with their RM on the beach.
