I'm sorry I didnt want to start an argument.
I'm new to the rep world, so I didnt understand why someone would spend so much money on frankens.
Now I understand.
My apologies
Good man. I recall asking a similar question when I first joined. After cruising for a while, I got it.
The other thing is you end up with a sense of achievement over and above throwing a credit card at an AD. Building watches is about a creating something that others do not have, not what others can/can't afford. In that way, your creation is far more exclusive that a store bought item. And yes, it's a rep, which means it's all about the hobby and not the resale. Don't forget to consider that all members are not in the same income bracket. Modding permits the creation of a nice piece over a period of time, not a lump sum at once.
Also you can (and I am) fit a gen ETA 2824 to the PO case, and then functionally you have an identical watch that didn't cost $3k+, when comparing ages of actual watches.
And a franken isn't necessarily a rep. I'm also building a franken SM300, but it's
all gen parts. The only thing not genuine is that it will have had my grubby fingers all over it. All new parts, with the exception of the serviced gen movement.
Once you get into it, if you do, you will find it rather addictive. I now have a number of reps in bits for modding, and have even successfully pulled apart my gen Breitling Blackbird to get the watchmakers finger smudge off the inside of the crystal. And I didn't know anything about working on watches 6 months ago.
So get into it, it's a great hobby. And yes, I do have sex regularly, so it ain't a nerd thing.
