I am definately going through stage 1 and 2 right now. Gotta say though, this forum is phenomonal. There is so much info, and helpful people that we are able to go through multiple cycles of the 6 stages. Kudos to the owners and mods and posters.

1. The Inception
You find a good replica forum and are overwhelmed by the amount of information. You drool at all the great wrist shots and feel the urge to buy a high quality rep for yourself.

2. Pulling The Trigger
After studying in the forums you find a dealer you like and starts negotiating . You are impressed by the quality of your first rep and wants more.

3. The Collection
Your watch box is filling up and you get more experienced. There is always a new watch on the horizon. Your new hobby is getting expensive.

4. The Cooling-Off
You are getting pissed off at the non-existent quality control and the small, but important tells. Movement problems, dealer problems and bad experiences pile up and makes you want to forget this hobby.

5. Knowing Frankenstein
You sell most of your collection and starts focusing on a brand or a specific model. You want to get your favorite rep as close to the original as possible. Modders, genuine movements and Superluminova are your new best friends.

6. Nothing Like The Gen
You realize how much money you have spent on counterfeits and that you might as well get the gen.

A few years later, it all starts over again ... ;)

I am on stage 4 but there will be no stage 5 or 6:cool:...
I realize that lot of watches are not needed. I own 4 rep and 2 gen... and thats it for me. No more...ok maybe one or max two- when my watch box( for 6 )is full, then definitely no more rep`s. I have own ~20 watch, but then I realize that why so many.... pointless.
Franken is not a option for me... I will not like to spend more then ~350 usd (+ service if needed)for one watch. My today`s collection is four watch`es ( Omega UPO, BB 6.75, IWC TGv1 and TAG Cal 1v2) and no need for more. Franken is not my cup of tea, I really like them but they are too expensive( more than 350usd :) ).
Gen watch....if I am looking my four rep watch... then I don`t see a point of buying gen.... These reps are quite good....not perfect but good. And that is suitable for me. I don`t look perfection, I will seek something what is acceptable to me and with acceptable price. If I will quit rep watch hobby I will not sell these four watch `es, I like these and price what I will got for these are not notable. So why to sell then?

My 5 cent`s

And that`s my story.

@mako: My hats off to you. Exactly this is the cycle that I have been experiencing.

Not so much of a cycle but more like stages that may repeat themselves. It can be from 6-4, 6-3, etc.. I do think through before buying (either gens or reps).

I'm all over the scale with a turnover of about a year. I went through a few rolex reps and settled in on submariner, so I sold all the reps and bought a gen sub LV. Now I'm into the Panerai reps and working on a favorite for the gen linup. I'm thinking a 104 right now will be my gen, but I'm waiting on an 88 from Vac. We'll see . . . I'm thinking the simplicity of the 104, but still an auto with a date. I see moving into the IWC linup in the upcoming years. The main thing is . . . yes I've spent a wad of money on reps, but resale is good! I've maybe lost $100 dollars total, and I've been able to really feel out what having the watch would be like. No buyers remorse when I got my gen. I was sure about what I wanted. The crazy thing is now I've got the gen rolexes (my wife has a platinum datejust with diamonds . . . god I love her i guess!) and now all I want to wear is my rep Panerai's LOL!!!

Ironically, I first bought a cheap Vacheron Constantin Overseas fake (it was pretty crappy, wasn't even the correct size) on Taobao, and it got me interested in buying a high quality replica, but for a number of reasons, this process dragged out for so long that I ended up receiving the gen before the replica arrived.

In my defense, I ordered the replica first, but it was part of a two watch transaction which included the Patek Nautilus 1:1 in Blue, and there was such a delay that I bought the gen as well (there was going to be a price increase I was trying to avoid).
