Really good setup, does the lightbox help with reducing reflection? My current problem is that whenever I try to take a picture of my watches front the glass reflects too much, making the dial somewhat unviewable.

Hi Trent. Yes the box does indeed allow you to reduce and get rid of reflections. The holes for the lens is very much part of that getting rid of all those distracting reflections. Patience is also a prerequisite of doing this. Inching the angle of the watch to get the perfect reflection-less image or even the shot with a little reflection to create interest.

Nice tutorial mate! Is it hard to cut the hole with the mug? Wouldn't it be hard to keep the mug still?

Mr D, thank you. I probably drew round the mug and cut it out. Cannot quite remember.

Thanks for putting this on here. I'm going to give this a try.

Do you light the box from the outside or would it be ok to cut another hole in the top and light it from above?

Al Fresco

Not sure if I get your question right.. But the general purpose of a Photo Box is to diffuse your light so you get an even lighting without direct reflections and to be able to decrease shadows etc.. Cutting another hole would eliminate this benefit solely.
So ideally you have your object in the box and light it indirectly by two angles to have that 'clean product photo' look.
I Hope this helps?

Cheers,
T.

It's probably me not explaining myself well.

Many light boxes seem to come with lights which are positioned around the box. You mention 'indirectly by two angles' so I'm guessing you do use them?

Basically I mean sth like this:

(Courtesy of the Internet ;) )

Depending on what and how you want to take the Photo you might want to change the directions/ angles each light comes from.

Cheers,
T

Well, they say a picture paints a thousand words. Thanks for that, I'm going to give this a go.

Tried Hobbeycraft and a couple of local art shops but can't seem to find the frosted corrugated plastic. Ebay/Amazon seem to have white stuff that is more or less solid rather than transparent.

If anyone has sourced some I'd appreciate a link.
