My AP 15500 on DLC Plasma treatment

Hello everybody,
as many of you know (for me it was a "discovery") the DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) is an industrial coating with a black / gray brown color that is applied to components subject to friction to improve their smoothness and hardness characteristics.
But it can also be used as an aesthetic finish and has the characteristic of increasing scratch resistance and, obviously, of coloring the treated surfaces respecting the underlying finiture.
It can be applied with different treatments including PVD or plasma.
The amount of carbon applied is a few microns and cannot be increased much because the tensions of the coating would cause it to detach.
It has been a while since I wanted to have my Zf AP 15500 black dial covered with DLC, I like a lot. But the treatments proposed by the TDs have never satisfied me because, at least from the images, I have never been able to understand the quality of the DLC they offer.
So I decided to try to have a steel watch treated that I purposely took from a TD, by an Italian company specializing in plasma-applied DLC. I choosed the plasma method because it's supposed to have a longer durability (but only the time will says that).

After some weeks of thinking, I decided and I shipped my watch. It came back treated last week.
Here following I would like to share pics with you, 'cause I'm really satisfied by the job done, even if the costs weren't cheap and some risks have to be done.

The color is absolutely stunning: a black / anthracite / slightly brown who revels the underlying steel with shiny parts on polished surfaces that contrast with the opacity of the satin finishes. Against this background, the polished screws, the indexes and the hands stand out like lights in the dark.
It's quite difficult to understand from pics the real life effect of this treatment.

Impressions and comments will be welcome, as comparisons with other DLC treatments of those who want to post images here.

i have done similar project over a year back. I took an old TF 15400 and had it beadblasted before dlc‘ing. the matte effect really made a difference. i had also black screws where one got lost in the dlc process - it was such a nice watch with many issues on the way (a fresh TD watch would have saved me many troubles tbh) but that was a nice learning experience.

I have sold it but ever since i dream of rebuilding it. Your watch looks totally awesome and pictures dont do the feeling and appearance / presence on the wrist any justice . its a black watch that ‚eats edges‘ so they are not as visible as on steel watches. Weqr in good health.
here my DLC projects from the past -
1. AP franken Case with my custom holder. I have prepared the case to my own holder and had different LwOs that i can drop in the different cases. Thats why there is different dials in the DLC Case

If you guys want to try something completely new check out CeraCote :) Looks totaly nice but its not as resistant as DLC - reminds me of the coating on radiators for example but all colors available.

Here a 15202, it was a quarz cheapie thats why the screws stick out. the bezel and case are one and cant be detached - still looks totally dope!

Great post, mate!
Thank you for sharing your work.
The comparison of different effects is always a good thing.
Personally I prefer the contrast between shining and matte parts, but it's just my personal point of view.
Your watches seems really beautiful, too and I'm sure pics aren't able to transfer their real presence.
Really interesting the white one, a newer version I never saw before.
Do you remember how many microns was your dlc?

yes you are right, its totally personal taste.

my DLC was 2-4 my thickness. The white was a steel model that was beadblasted before and dissambled for ceracoating. interessting: the ceracote is a common method to personalze weapons - i thought about applying a camo pattern. have not seen that before but its hard to create. Color was snow white it really did glow! its a real thick layer of that ceramic. i can recommend it - BuT as the layer is thick you might get problems with gaps.

Best would be matte + shiny or matte + brushed - all matte may be a little boring iver time.

You can simply google for Ceracote and cjose any business. the one where i have had the watch done was a german company. depending on where you live you should chose one in your area.

That white dial looks better than the ZF 15500! What a nice sunburst effect.

Will they be able to disassemble the watch? Or you need to do it first and send it to them?

That was the issue I had with my project where finding a company is easy, but getting it disassembled is another as I personally couldn't take the bracelet or the bezel apart as I don't have the equipment or perhaps the know how.

On AP thats rather simple to dissamble if you have the special tool.

i sended the watch dissambled. i called before to talk through the options as i wanted to apply a Camo pattern but they had no idea of how to reassamble or put together the watch for the pttern to make sense on the assambled watch.

So find one in your country and ask how you should provide the prts.

no it was a german company. Just go on the net and search for a company that does DLC in your town/ area/ country and call them.
