Help me choose!

Some back story. I have, for the most part, gotten out of reps all together. I hang out with too many watch people who are the type that know the difference. I've never been a Panerai guy, but recently i've been interested in getting a rep to see how they wear, etc. From my reading it seems that the 000, 112, and 390 are the most basic of PAM's and as such are very well repped and hard to call out. (If I am wrong on this, please help me out, I am a Rolex/Omega guy)

So I pose to you, the Paneristi of RWI, what PAM should I buy and which of these is the most accurate to gen and would you recommend to a brother in need.

Thanks and Happy Saturday!

I am no expert but all the base ones are pretty damn accurate. 000/005/111 are all good places to start. Even some of the submersibles are scary good like the 243. The only gripe I have about the base ones are the crystals suck.

Be careful...PAMs get addicting. Good luck buddy!

111. All day. I've owned three Gen Pams and I'm still happiest with value for dollar of my 111 (I know people are going to jump on me about that statement ). No matter what you'll be happy if you get a good quality 111 or 105. Or get both!! Get some proper straps and you'll be all set. Good luck!

I'd get 000 or 005 for more casual look or 390 for more formal look. Honestly you can't go wrong with either of them and they are scary close to gen. Nice to see you are finally trying out a PAM but be careful, it might be real addiction. ;)

Glad to hear it, the 111 looks great but that open caseback can be a killer in my shoes lol

Thanks, the 005 looks great and closed caseback makes me happy so thanks for the heads up on that! Who makes the best version of the 000, 005 and 390? Might wind up with all 3....

Or go for one PVD one to mix things up. Davidsen has some cool stuff on his website. Can't go wrong with Noob or Z-factory. Guys? I haven't paid too much attention lately, so help him out. Also, try Ale's posts - he has bunch of knowledge

I'd say 390, totally unbiased of course.. But I love it. I love the dial color. However, since is "chocolate" I find I'm unhappy with straps. As a black dial you can switch straps more. But, that's just me of course. I love my 390..

If you are looking for automatics (most PAMs are handwind) then I'd suggest the PAM 299 or 104, Noob O edition. The 104 is polished shiny whole case while the 299 has only a polished bezel, the rest is brushed. The 299 might be more versatile as it is less bling and you will probably buy a custom leather or Assolumente strap or rep rubber dive strap for it anyways, but still have the option of the metal bracelet. The titanium PAM 351 looks different from the 104 and 299.

If you can forego the signature Panerai crown guard, then the Pam 388 KW non-inverted Radiomir is a very nice dressy and gen like watch.

Note that daylight lume color is green for most Pam automatics and yellow for handwind, but both glow green in the dark.

Be forwarned that you are entering dangerous territory, venturing into the pricey world of crocodile leg, hornback, Gunny, Wotancraft, etc. custom straps...but start with the basic 3: a black croc, an Assolumente, and a rep Pam black diver.

Look at all of the Pams and custom straps here:

Just my $0.02, hope it helps.

I agree, I would steer clear of the 111 and display back. Although it is my favorite pam. Both Rep and Gen.

000-005 are winners for sure, and would do fine for you.
I have NO Idea what a Z factory piece is. I've only seen one displayed here once. And wasn't impressed at all.

A little tid-bit that might make you feel a little better about your being a "(Rolex/Omega guy)", and trying a Pam. Are you aware that Rolex and Pam are are Brothers from different Mothers? (well actually the same Mothers) LOL!!!

You see, Pam was designed by Panerai, and produced by Rolex for the first Pam's. The case was made from modified Rolex Pocket watch Cases, and use the movements that Rolex used for these watches.

So you can wear one with your Rolex pride, as it is a part of a proud History in Horology. ;-)
:greedy:

The best advice I or anyone else could possibly give, is "READ The Pam Guide in this Forum". The info is invaluable!

Yes, it will take some time, as all things needed for proper decisions do. but it will give you a completely different take on Rep's. There is a LOT more to it than simple copies. Far from it! And a Huge reason we collect.

I have Gen's and Rep's of Pam's and enjoy them equally if this tells you anything about the level they have achieved.
And I am VERY Picky!!!

appreciate the heads up, definitely not looking at auto's. I'm too traditionalist for that, really leaning 390 for the classic looks and no complication.

As far as straps go, thankfully Peter Gunny and I go waaaaaaaay back!
