So I'm crazy excited to be getting a 1680 Red Sub from yodog, his stuff is completely unreal and I can't wait until its in my hands.

I have a couple questions that I've been researching here on the forums but it's not completely clear to me because I don't know a lot about building watches (although I'd like to learn someday!)

The watch I'll be getting is the cartel 1680 from Sead I believe, it's coming with the 21j high beat movement. I've read that the big 3 low-beat movements to put into it are the eta-2846, miyota 8215 and the DG2813 low beat.

For the life of me I can't seem to find a 2846 anywhere so I'm between the miyota and the Dg2813...is there an upside to either? Is this a job I should not attempt since I literally have never opened a watch up myself before haha. I live in a pretty rural area so I don't really have a local watch smith available.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm ecstatic about getting the watch from yodog and I just want to put in a better movement so it will 1) have the proper low-beat movement and 2) have a long happy life on my wrist haha

thanks!

Startime Supply has 2846's. You can also search the bay for them. For me, the benefit of having at ETA movement is reliability and performance. They'll last a lifetime.. Next, comes compatibility. Lots of aftermarket suppliers for hands and dials w/ correct feet position and you won't have to wait weeks for new DG hands. Also, if anything should need replacement on the movement, parts are everywhere.

There are also other slow-beat ETAs available. Not just the 2846. 2879, 2892 to just name a couple. One thing to note is that from my experience, the low beat ETAs do not hack.

On the other hand, a new DG movement is only $25 or so. Only downfall is swapping the seconds had is tricky and often leads to breaking the seconds pinion, leaving the broken part inside the hand... In short, you'll need to get new hands... And I believe Raffles is the best source for DG hands. Another con is that the seconds hand has a common stutter issue that occurs from shock. On some, I've tapped the crystal and I can see it move.

I haven't ha any experience with the 8215 so I can't help you there. But all the movements have their pros and cons. I'm sure others can chime in as well.

Good luck!

The 2879 is really popular for a low beat swiss. I bought a dozen of them a while back. Cheap as chips and pretty. The only problem is that they come with a tap 9 stem so you have to convert it to a tap 10 with an extender/converter so the crown will thread on. This guy has them in the US on ebay and that is who I got mine from. They are NOS but who knows how old they are. Pristine and all of mine work perfectly. YMMV. Your problem is that you will need a new dial and hands since those won't fit. You paid I assume for someone to mod the existing dial and hands? If so, I would leave it alone. If you want to learn buy a $45 sub on dhgate and play with it. Don't pay for a modded watch and then break it to pieces.

Is it possible to simply replace a 2813 movement with an ETA 2846 low beat or 2836 high beat?

No - dial feet, hands, date wheel would not fit. Most of the 2813 hi beats come with the date wheel overlays that attach to the center pinion post, whereas ETAs and asian clones are glued on.

Thanks! Makes sense of course, but just to make sure. I'm planning to do a new 1680 build but was unsure wether to pick a 2813 movement or 2836 clone. In the longer term I would like to insert an ETA 2846.

Wow thanks for all the replies guys. I think I'm just going to go down the route of a low beat DG2813 for ease of installation. Since it is 1:1 with the current dial and hands etc

That's a good route. Be sure to get an extra set of DG hands at the same time. I don't want to be a "Debbie-Downer", but you'll want to have a back up set of hands in case the seconds hand pinion snaps. Maybe get a few extra movements since they're so cheap.

Congrats on a great classic and pics please once it arrives. Assuming it´s yodog-modded the best is to simply leave it alone and use as is until something breaks/has to be done anyway. Depending on the highbeat that´s in it the hands may also not fit the low-beat DG2813.

Just give it time, along the way get a very cheap training-watch and possibly You will be able to collect parts as the 2846, dial and hands, crown for it along the way on m2m. If the stem is different, the crown has to be switched over as well or the stem resized and that may be the trickiest part.

Yea you're absolutely right. I think I was getting overly excited and wanted to do everything at once. I've decided to enjoy the beautiful watch as yodog leaves it and leave it alone until/if something happens
