This thread has been very helpful, especially the side by side comparison picture. I agree with @optical regarding the date wheel color and the cleaner dial spacing of the XVIII, which is why I have ordered one from V7F.

Very happy with the decision :)

hey mate. does the dial have a texture to it like the gen? How is the watch overall?

Yep, it´s like the SeaQ-Bracelet and bot are a real(!) pain in the ass to shorten ;-)
But if you have mastered this, it wears really comfortable.

How many links / wrist size does it accommodate when new? I have 19cm wrists and am always hesitant to get a rep on bracelet because I think it might not fit and then I have to get a strap anyway. I really want a bracelet watch with a micro adjustment (but not a Rolex fan).

I have 17.5cm wrist and removed 1 and a half links.
I guess for a 19cm wrist it won't fit and extra links are needed

How did you get a brushed bracelet?

Hi everyone,

It seems I'm not the only one "struggling" with this issue.

I've done a bit of research, and here's what I found:

IWC Mark XX
✅ Pros:
  • Lug to Lug is smaller, it makes the proportions nicer
  • I like the way the numbers are displayed a little better
❌ Cons (V7F):
  • Bizarre end link, they point downards too much, which seems to be annoying for bigger wrists (mine is 7.5" / 19cm, which is bigger than some people who've been complaining about them). ➡️ Perhaps that's only an issue with the steel bracelet though?
  • The 2 last letters of "Schaffhausen" are a bit off on some models. ➡️ Is that only on some models?
❌ Cons (ZF):
  • Movement is apparently very bad ➡️ Maybe I could just change the movement? I've read very bad reviews, like scratches on the glas... ALso everyone says V7F is the way to go, so I'm hesitant to go agains the tide.

IWC Mark XVIII Le Petit Prince
✅ Pros:
  • Doesn't seem to have significant deffects like the other
❌ Cons:
  • Well the pros of the Mark XX are the cons of this one: I think it's a little less nice, but not sure how this will feel IRL.

🏭 Factory:
  • It seems V7F is the most available, and most people mention this model. But I heard M+F and ZF make good models too, are these still worth considering?
Bracelet vs Strap
For both watches I'm also hesitating between strap and bracelet.
I don't like metal bracelets on watches in general. It gives "rich old man trying to show off" vibes IMO (no offense to those who like it).
BUT
  • Straps are easy to source.
  • Maybe I'll be a rich old man trying to show off some day 😅 (I mean maybe I'll like the style), and bracelets seem harder to source.
  • I read lots of bad things about the quality of the rep straps.
  • I could even find a gen strap.
So I'm thinking to buy the steel bracelet version regardless.
Just wondering if the watch itself is the exact same in the two versions ?

I'd be happy to hear what you think.

I own the ZF Mark XX and it is great. Movement was a bit loud due to the Miyota unidirectional rotor, but I silenced it and love the watch. Put it on a good leather strap, and it looks great. The dial catches the light very well, which you can't really see in my picture from the rain below.

Damn... Maybe I'll just buy both !

got a v7f xx and it's an awesome watch, almost all reviews both rep and gen highly rate the bracelet but i thought it was a bit gay and made the watch look a bit too bland, so I bought some rubber straps off alix which are of awesome quality. Have a red and black rubber strap and highly rate the look over the steel bracelet. I was also going to get a black leather strap but the black rubber scratches that itch

I keep reading people mentioning nato straps, I did a Google reseach but there are lots of different results, from $20 to $200+ straps from unknown brands. What exactly do you refer to when talking about nato strap please?

I'm wondering if I should get the more expensive bracelet version + the $68 strap if I'm almost sure I'll never wear the bracelet.

Gen straps are like $350, I might consider buying one if I really like the watch.

Are there other mods worth considering on this watch? Like a gen dial and/or crystal maybe?

It seems there's this brand: https://www.esprit-nato.com/
Is that what you're talking about? If yes, which strap did you get for this watch?

I like the Mark 18 much better, because if the black date wheel which they have made white all all mark XX's now.

I prefer the cleaner spaced out dial of Mark XVII [XvIII]
I am in the process of coming to a decision between them and wouldn´t have figured out the differences between 18 and 20 by myself, so therefore I´m very grateful about these profound remarks. (y)
Are there any significant differences between the bracelets of 18 and 20?
From what I can decipher the mechanism of the micro adjustment looks the same.
As of now I will go for a blue 18 from V7F.

i got this one https://www.zuludiver.com/products/1973-british-military-watch-strap-typhoon-sailcloth-sandblasted

as for mods- for me, and I think generally, its regarded as really well done. I saw a gen (in case) and nothing stood out difference wise. some advocate swapping the asian movement for a swiss sellita (SW300?) for a few hunded extra $, you ask a TD when ordering one. personally I didnt want to spend extra and my stock one works fine, if it craps out maybe I'll swap then.
