Hey, believe it or not I read somewhere a few years back that when watch making first started some used the oils surrounding your nose for lubricant in the parts inside. No BS.
I CAN believe it. I used to live near Augsburg, Germany, and the leather artisans' guild area was adjacent to canals; that way they could sluice away all the noisome effluent arising from the production process. This was back in C16 - now it's a trendy area with restaurants, as it's right in the old city.
Leather processing is both dirty and smelly, and traditional methods used faeces, for e.g, in the process. Well, that was history ...
Now, I really don't mean to be a moralistic sounding pain, but I wish we could know that our straps were humanely harvested and / or not threatening endangered species (girding for
flames now).
In my mind, for e.g., it's not cool to have a
pangolin strap. If you have a choice you can excercise it ... leave it at that, for I do have some calf straps so I'm feeling hypocritical.
But this position is also contingent on how the animals are treated / slaughtered.
In sum: I'd be willing to pay more for straps that have the
good treatment of animals in mind.
Just as I'm not going 'veggo', but will pay more for organic meat etc.
