Some more information. Here is a comparison of the 305 and the 243. Notice you cannot tell the difference between the sub dials:

Below is the link to the 305 per the Panerai website. It appears there are faint circles on the subdial

Now, here is confirmed gen 243 dial. It is an "I" series:

Therefore, it appears the 243 does not have circles in the sub dial. At least the earlier versions.

What I think occurred is the manufactures are using the same dial for multiple sub models. Of course we cannot confirm that a late model 243 does not have circles because no evidence exists thus far. In any event, from more than 12 inches away you cannot distinguish between the two sub dials as per the link on the comparison posted above. I trust this will clarify matters.
