Hey everyone,
First, i would just like to state that although i am new(ish) to the replica watch scene and all the specifics inclusive of the hobby, i have a few questions that really in hindsight should have been asked prior (forgive me for that) :/.
Anyway, so i became a member here and did as much research as i 'thought' i'd require; first to decide where to acquire the piece i wanted and second, the quality as a whole...I decided on the 5513 provided by Marvellous Replica.
Now, given the research prior to enquiry to purchase i thought this would be a great start. I had heard nothing but good reviews and praise for Marvellous and for the most part, it hasn't been too bad...until recently!.
With the piece having the JKF factory case etc and with the 'alleged' a2836-2 movement, i gave it a go and made the purchase.
On the plus side, the purchase was flawless and Marvellous provided answers to the questions i initially asked, and was happy...however recent discussion with him/they have produced many questions but also provided answers i'd asked myself.
With this piece going to be my first modification piece and had acquired all the necessary equipment, e.g. tools, dial & hands, crown & tube, bracelet and a few extra items to make the piece function better.
Well, i had asked Marvellous yesterday to confirm whether the movement was indeed a a2836-2 movement, and was informed that 'they' all call the a2836-2 the a2836 - But why...? - This was my first question. Question:- How does one know whether it is a a2836 or a2836-2 and differences?
Next was a question i asked about the stem...
Now because i intend to replace the original for the period correct Athaya 702 (currently en-route), i'd asked whether on a fleeting thought what stem type it took - The reason was i was informed that i may have to purchase a new stem; being the old stem being too short...so i ordered one (non-helical).
I asked Marvellous what stem was in the movement regardless and the response was, 'Sharp:Square:Twisted' - So i took this to mean pointed at the end as usual, then the square section actually square not helical, then obviously the 'twisted' bit being the threads.
He/they replied by stating that they do not disassemble or rebuild often - this obviously got my attention!.
Now, before anyone jumps in here; I am aware that there is a large part of the 'Trusted Dealers' that are just that; they acquire the timepiece from the factory or elsewhere and then just test the piece to make sure everything works (or indeed to minor construction).
It is more than likely they don't disassemble these movements in any form and just ship them out in the watch as long as they function.
This explains why there's many hobbyists if you will which take these pieces apart immediately upon purchase to mod them and then service and regulate them.
Let me be clear here - I am not 'bashing' on Marvellous per se but, the answers to the questions were either language barrier issues or they (Marvellous) just receive the watch, make minor construction to the watch, then test and ship out once working. I find it odd that surely when i questioned the stem they would provide a straight answer rather than try to explain what i was talking about.
In terms of the stem by the way, they told me to just remove the stem and 'have a look' - Well, until all my equipment arrives and parts, i don't plan on starting anything until that time, so that is why i asked the questions.
Another item which is annoying me now is, the 'ghost date' issue it clearly has and possible implications to modding the piece.
The movement does have the 'ghost date' and because i have a new dial & hands from Helenarou here (the dial having the dials pins on the back of the dial, is this going to cause and issue because of the 'ghost date' being present?
Also, can anyone inform me what i need to do in order to remove this issue. I know about the setting lever but i have no knowledge as to where to acquire the correct one or what needs to be done to rectify the issue.
What happens if the movement has a spacer underneath the dial?
What do i need to do to fit the new dial correctly?
I can solve the issues i'm sure (an engineer by trade) but, being new to this, advice is clearly required and assistance. I just need to know what i have to do and the possible issues i may encounter.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated
