I told someone my rep Rolex Milgauss was gen. :(

Before you kill me... it would have been really socially awkward to have fessed up. I've been on a waiting list for an iPhone 4 for a few weeks and I got the call from my new carrier to come in today to pick it up. While I was doing all the paperwork one of the senior branch guys came on through and I saw a really stunning gold watch with a big chrono dial and a beautiful chocolate brown leather band. It looked a lot like a Breguet Type XX Rose Gold but it wasn't one. Anyway, I said as he walked past "Mate that is a beautiful watch you've got there!" and he stopped and grinned and said "Yeah it's <he said the maker but i've totally forgotten>, I love it." then he spotted my rep and came over and had a look, immediately his eyes lit up and he was all like "Nice! Bet that cost you a truckload, that's really great! Awesome seconds hand sweep." and I just didn't have the heart to go "No actually it's totally fake sorry bud" so I just go "Ahhh... yeah it was a gift, it's a little above my paygrade." and he's just like "Mate, what do you do for a living!" and we got to talking for a while. I really didn't feel comfortable with him being so impressed with the rep thinking it was gen but I really didn't have the balls to say anything. So I just had a bit of a chat and got my phone and we parted ways.

Has this ever happened to you guys before? I s'pose it's the opposite of the existing spotted thread... have you had someone spot your watch and start a conversation? Did they think it was gen?

Also while I've got you reading, I dunno how easy this'll be but does anyone know the manufacturer? It's just a wild stab in the dark if it's identifiable but I specifically remember the manufacturer was definitely a persons name. The watch was fairly big, probably a 45mm or something, I think it was a chrono and I reckon it was yellow gold and chunky with a really nice chocolate brown leather strap with cream stitching. Any ideas? I'd love to get one.

95% of the people who wear reps do it, 15% deny it screwing up the percentage as a result.

Well I said in a thread earlier that I will tell people if they ask that it is genuine to avoid being judged negatively or getting into a "fake watches" conversation, but this guy took real interest in it, was obviously a watch fan, and I found it uncomfortable to lie to him like that. Probably would have been worse to tell him oh yeah it's a replica, but still, I was wondering if anyone had any similar stories.

jaques piccard, poul picot, roger dubois, alain silberstein, maurice lecroix, FAKEMASTER :lol1: the list is looooong!

it happened to me once when me the wife n kids were going in to the hard rock cafe in cph. tha guy arrangeing the seating grabbed my wrist and said "wow, is that the new explorer?" (I was wearing a v2 dssd) and I just said no it's the deep sea, and he went "cool, I just ordered a datejust", I went "ordered??- I didn't know they had waiting lists for dj's?" (it was all akward) then he said, "yeah I ordered it from the us, they're much cheaper there, over the internet" looking like a guy that had just said too much :) so I just said congrats, good to hear! and he thought he just got away with talking to a gen owner

then I went there a year later (last week) and the guy was there- so I asked him. " hey that's you with the datejust" and he remembered me right away, so he showed me his datejust (which I must admit I couln't confirm to be a rep nor gen in any way) and looked nervous, and he asked if I still had my explorer :), so I told him I sold it and bought a fiddy, and showed him my dsn fiddy, he replied "yeah, it's too much money to have in a rolex anyway" not knowing that the fiddy costs 6 times the price of a exploreer, which I by the way never had :)

please note, I never told him mine was a gen!!!! but I think he assumed it was :)

I we've only been asked once if my watch was real or fake. I was new to the game at the time, and told the watch was fake. TBH if I'm asked again today, I'll probably pretend it's gen.

All the people I'm somehow close to know my watches are reps. Some even think my gen is a rep :)

I would happily tell someone i dont know that my reps are gens. my friends all know i wear reps and their surprised by the quality. the only other friend of mine who has a watch has an gen Oris f1 chrono.

Dont worry about telling people its gen if they believe it they believe it, if they doubt it 90% of them wouldnt call you out anyway those 10% that would are arseholes that cant prove it unless they are geeks like us or WIS anyway.

Happened to me several times. Depending on the people I tell them it is a rep or I just say yes, expansive ( who knows what expansive is, 200 or 2000 or 20000? ) and then go on with the conversation.

The best happened last years at the Golf mens captain day dinner, the mens captain came over, looked at my AP Black Themes and said, whoooooow, what a nice watch. I did not start a discusion, I took it of my wrist, handed it over to him and said, wear it during dinner. After dinner he came back and gave me the watch and said, one day I will buy one......

I once told my Breitling was a fake. Or to be exact, my late boss did, who had a gen Movado. He couldn't stand that the client thought I had a more expensive watch and told them while we were in a meeting. Very embarassing situation - must be similar to one holding a speech and then farting undeliberately in front of the audience.

My stupid boss has died of cancer, fortunately, and I had no love at all for Movados ever since.

Story dates back to the early 90ies ;)

Today I learned to say it's a gen - it's easier on people (who don't care anyway).

If it makes you feel any better, I think that you found the best possible solution under the circumstances. You didn't break the guy's heart, given that he thought that he was beholding greatness. But you didn't represent yourself as being some rich hotshot either. He can make his own assumptions. :)

i have never been asked, but there is no need to go out of your way to tell people its fake. around here a 200 dollar watch is as much as luxury item as a 20000 dollar watch. although my friends would question why i would spend that on a watch, do you know how many cows you can buy for 20 grand??? keep in mind that 2 watches can't make baby watches....

Well yeah that was my aim. We had a really friendly chat and I was having jokes with him and the trainee he was assisting to run up my iPhone contract. My intention was certainly not to mislead him, but merely to keep the situation as calm and safe as possible, I think if I said it was a fake it could have made it awkward for everyone instead of just slightly awkward for me masquerading my rep as a gen.

At the end of the day though, they must get like a hundred customers or more through there a day, he'll have forgotten me already but he might not have forgotten the watch. I s'pose if he really did like it and it made him happy then best to let sleeping telecomms employees lie hey...

Today I learned to say it's a gen - it's easier on people (who don't care anyway).

Said it better than I could manage! Very simply put, it's easier on people to just say it's gen. I was far from a snob about it, I made a joke about how I could afford it but it would be very silly of me to buy it because it was above my paygrade, I'd be better off buying a nice second hand BMW (Which is actually my plan for the money this year!) but if it was a gift, hey, what can you do...

And TECHNICALLY, for those of you who read my thread, it was a gift. Just from myself to myself, hah!

I used to have a gen SS Datejust and people asked me all the time if it was fake.

I find most people have never heard of a lot of the watch brands I wear now, and the ones that have are usually polite enough not to ask. As a general rule of thumb, I don't wear reps that I couldn't plausibly afford. Of course, I do have a few for special occasions.:)

You did WHAT!?

You just crossed the line, mate.
You understand that there´s no turning back now?
You are forever lost in the world of reps!
(Just as most of us here...;););))

That Milgauss of yours truly is a piece of art.

thats the problem. there really isn't any point owning a gen to be accused of it being a rep.

i do recall being on a building site and one of the site managers was there with a gleaming full gold day date on. lol i turned to him and said, whats the time on your spanish never right? he gave me a glare then laughed. i had a 3 tone day date masterpiece on at the time. lol he clocked mine and i said......£90 off the net laughed and walked off.

Usually I can deflect the conversation enough so that the question doesn't come up. If pressed by someone I don't know I just say it was a graduation gift....all my friends know the truth though.

Luckily, I'm middle-aged, over-weight, and own my company. So I can pull off most watches and have never been asked if one was real.
However, when someone notices my watch, I just thank them and quickly ask to see theirs. And I am usually wearing a gen. Gen owners know nothing about watches for the most part, so if you don't act like you really know anything about watches you are more plausible! :)

If anyone ever asked whether my watch is real or fake, I would answer "It cost enough - I hope I got what I paid for." And that answer would go for either gen or rep.
