I think
timnic54 was on the right track. What does "worth" mean, and how is it applied to rep versus gen watches. The dictionary meaning is "the level at which something deserves to be valued or rated.". Is the level of value of a rep watch equivalent to that same value of a gen? Value can be measured tangibly by its monetary value, or intangibly by measures of affection, satisfaction and other qualities. Different people will put different emphasis on these qualities to make that determination. Think of people who spend large amounts of money on restoration of a watch that has sentimental value only. For them, it was worth it; they'll never recover that money in a sale.
For me, I am getting my rep Daytona primarily for the quality of movement within the watch and secondarily for the beauty of the watch. The Noob 3140 is as close as I can get at the moment to a Rolex 3140 for the money I have available to spend. The 3140 is a robust movement and I'm hoping that, with care and attention over time, I can enjoy that same robustness, accuracy and longevity in the rep movement as I might have if I had bought the genuine product. So, I measure worth in the watch's ability to maintain good time; I'm measuring the primary worth through satisfaction. If the watch does not perform to my expectations, I'll feel that it is not worth.
I also enjoy the look of the Daytona and I'm hoping that the Noob will live up to my expectations of that beauty. I'm not so concerned with the minutia about reproduction accuracy as what consumes many others here on this board. If the watch looks good to me (that's the key phrase), then it will be worth the outlay. I'm not out to impress others about the luxury items I can buy or trying to fool someone into thinking this is the real thing. Buying the rep for me is a stepping stone to an eventual purchase of the genuine article, once the Rolex market settles down, but I get to enjoy the watch now.
