Is my Gen Tank Solo actually Gen??

Heres the story - was eye balling a Tank solo large for a long time - looked into reps first, never got one, decided to buy a second hand gen on c24. Seller had 10 transactions. 1,600$ LNIB condition.

Came with box and papers - "older style cartier box with white lining. Watch was stamped as a 2015 model in the bookelet. - Seller said he purchased the watch at an estate sale among a few other pieces at the same time. Said he had a local watch dealer replace the battery and strap after purchasing it as the original strap "had signs of wear".

First red flag is the printing in the booklets looks rough and not high quality. Like it was done on a cheap printer 10 years ago. Although the paper is relatively thick and not a flimsy book, the pictures look crap. I have a gen Rolex OP39 and the gen box and papers is leaps and bounds better than the one i got in my Cartier.

Secondly - the watch was advertised as unworn condition - which the case was pristine - no hairlines even, but the seller said he swapped the strap with a new strap - which i know is a common thing to do with reps - throw a gen strap on and call it a day.

Thirdly the Cabochon shape is pointer than the majority of tank solos i can find out there. From my research, it seemed that was a tell for the ZF because it was pointier and less round than the Gen. Mine is definitely more cone shaped than the one I saw at the AD and from what i can see on Cartiers website.

I asked the seller to provide his invoice for the watch purchase and his servicing, and he said he was not able to itemize them because he bought and serviced a few watches at once at the estate sale.

I brought the watch into my AD today to check it out - and he said it looked good to him - but of course i knew 10x as much as the rep. He was saying things like "oh yeah its got the cartier at 7 o'clock." He was literally useless and suggested to have them put an new battery in so the in house watch maker could examine the movement and pressure test (50$)... or send my watch to the Ben Bridge HQ to have an appraisal done on the watch. (would take about 4 weeks and cost 150$). They said thats the only way to verify authenticity.

He also suggested I call cartier and ask them if there were any modifications to the cabochon/crown over the years. I contacted them and i have a guy looking into it for me.

All this to say - I contacted the seller and he said hes willing to do a full refund on the watch if i want. He has been very understanding and professional. He even reimbursed me 150$ because I told him i was going to send it into Ben Bridge HQ to get appraised and he wanted to cover the expense.

What do you guys think? To me... the dial looks gen - spend hours comparing to K11 and AF/ZF reps, but the cabochon and the crap papers are taking me for a loop.

What are your thoughts on the Cabochon and the crap printing on the papers? - Also noticed that the back engraving looks high quality under magnification - but it looks like its laser printed instead of being engraved. - is this a tell?

Would really appreciate your thoughts and suggestions as to what to do next. If its real, id love to keep it for the price i paid, figured id start here before taking another step.

Hey mate, I just got a Tank Solo Large from C24 as well. However $1,600 LNIB seem too good to be true.

Mine still under warranty and the serial number on the case can be checked on Cartier's website. However, I heard that the serial number couldn't guarantee a genuine Cartier. I have posted some photos even with the movement for hope some member owning a genuine one can help verify it like axel.gold .

The Cabochon on mine does look rounder and the print a bit sharper. Have you checked the serial number on your as well as have a look at the movement?

My thread is here, https://forum.replica-watch.info/forum/cartier/9726094-legit-check-this-cartier-tank-solo-large

mcn7710 Thanks for the response and photos.

I checked the serial number on Cartier's site and it said it couldn't find it. - im not sure if this confirms its a fake, or if it just means the owner didn't register the team online. If it was truly purchased at an estate sale, I doubt someone elderly would take the time to register the watch online. What are your thoughts on the SN not pulling up a product on their site?

To be honest I don't know. First I thought a valid SN will make sure its authenticity. Mine is still under warranty so when I checked, it showed up. I tried the SN on my Santos GF, it said couldn't find it, of course, because it is a rep.

But I know how the rep is good this day. If you couldn't check your SN on Cartier's website, I think it is not a good sign.

I will call Cartier boutique tomorrow and find out if they can appraise it.

mcn7710 i only put in the serial number from the case back into Cartier search engine. - I was not provided a warranty card with my box and papers - on the Cartier site it says provide the SN from the warranty card. So maybe that’s why it’s not finding it.

also - you need to consider - if for whatever reason your watch is not authentic- if you send it into Cartier and they notice it’s not authentic they may confiscate the watch - or if they find out that not all parts are authentic they may force you to replace the parts before returning. That can be a very costly route - might be better to have an AD check it out than sending it straight to Cartier.

Even without a warranty card, you still can check your SN combining the 4 digits on the lower case back, the SN will be [4 digits] [number and letter above]. I called Cartier today and they said you can use the SN to check the collection launch date. So it should be in their system.

For what it's worth my Tank rep did show up on the Cartier database, despite being a rep. Take it to an AD if you're unsure.

Danii mcn7710 - chatted with two cartier boutiques and they both suggested that being able to find or not find the SN in the database carries little weight on authenticity. My watch is en route to my closest cartier boutique.

Danni mcn7710 Cartier boutique confirmed its a replica. Wow.. fortunately the seller is refunding me.

At least you got your money back mate. Who can we trust nowadays!!! Even if you use ecsrow service, nothing guarantees that what we buy is genuine.

I am wondering what C24 will respond to this if you inform them about the rep you just got. Are they going to ban the seller?

mcn7710 the entire convo with the seller is logged in c24 chat - which mods all have access to. The seller offered to refund me and already sent the money via pay pal since it was past 14 days (the refund window via c24). C24 then followed up with me and asked me if the issue was fully resolved and I said yes. From what it seems the seller will be fine - and I will say - I’m lucky my seller is a stand up guy - because I could have easily been hosed here. One thing I learned from this whole thing - the tank solo large is def NWBIG hahaha. An AD could not even tell the difference with a loupe and a gen tank solo sitting right next to it. Even the boutique I sent it to couldn’t tell until they inspected the movement.
