Is it even worth it to buy gen anymore?

I'm talking about the submariner. The noob v3 is looking great and I recently was promoted and can now afford the submariner, but is it really worth it?

If you have dreamt about having a Rolex then it's worth it to go Gen. Rolex is the most challenged watch by skeptics, whether you're wearing a rep or gen. When you get asked about it a couple of times, you feel bad when wearing a rep and you feel good when wearing a gen. If you're only mildly interested in Rolex, then just stick with the rep.

For most other brands, you'll never get asked about authenticity unless you're with a bunch of WIS's. Rolex is the only brand that's fake until proven real.

If you buy a used Rolex off the forums, as one example, it will hold its value rather well. Or so it seems to me.

In other words, that seems a far better value if you are not swimming in cash.

For me, that depends on two things: how obsessed with the incorrect details of the rep you are, and whether there is another watch that isn't repped well that your interested in. For me, I have zero desire to purchase a gen sub-c, it's repped very well, and I can live with the minor remaining inaccuracies (white paint on bezel, incorrect direction of the crown when setting time). Currently, I'm liking the tudor line very much, and since the pelagos rep is probably a while out, and I doubt very much we'll see a fastrider black shield, those are my next two gens.

Pre owned rolex watches are commodities. You buy them right, you will never loose any money. Think of it as a savings account you can wear.

If you look at it from purely a money perspective gen is surely not worth it. If you compare rep to gen, lay them side by side, and ask if the gen is worth 5000$ more, the answer is easy. You must be crazy to spend the money on a gen.

Yet that is what I'm contemplating right now. I bought a BP SD as my first rep and I like it a lot. I wanted to know what I can get for my money buying a rep, and I also wanted to test how a Rolex feels on my wrist. I have only once worn one of my other watches since I got it a few week ago. While I can enjoy my rep, I just know that it is not perfect, and this is something that is often nagging me when I look at it.

I want perfect.

Another thing is, buying a Rolex doesn't feel like wasting money. I looked at other options for nice 40mm divers, Breitling, Tag Heuer, Sinn etc. Thing is, I could buy 5-10 really nice watches for the price of one Rolex, but they would not satisfy me as much. Buying something else feels like consumption, you buy something, it loses value. With Rolex you buy it, wear it for some time, and you can sell it for the same price or with profit if you want to.

Rolex is special in this case. This article lists a lot reasons why they are Why It's Okay to Hate Rolex. So from my perspective, I wouldn't buy such an expensive watch from another brand. Rolex? Maybe. I'm going crazy lately that it's stupid to spend this much on watch, but I still want one.

Buy the right gen and it can appreciate. I'd never buy a gen panerai. Gen rolex is about the only way I'd go for resale.

The sub-c has been my grail since I got into reps. I've sold nearly all of my reps as I've figured out my taste in watches after owning dozens of amazing reps. The sub-c is next on my gen hit list. Fake people wear fake watches :)

As most have said, if you can buy you watch preowned you can easily get a Sub-c for $7k LNIB with papers. I suspect if you keep it in good shape you shouldn't have an issue selling it for that a few years from now.

As far as being rich or affording it etc.. I know many people who would say they can't afford a $7k watch, yet have 2 - $50k vehicles in their garage. Its all in what you value.

Gen Rolex used watches hold their value. I bought a gen used GMT 2C in 2009 & sold it the same year for same price. $5,200 with box & papers.

Reason I sold it was the green GMT hand & date. Thing is, if I would have kept the watch, I could have sold it 4 years later for over 6k & a profit, thanks to Rolexes price increase.

The gen that has been out if my grasp is the 18kt solid gold GMT, I had the money in 2010 & could have bought a used one with papers for 13k & now they are up to 15 or 16k.

I'm saving up for one as I've had several reps & gens & it seems that none hold true to their resale value in the rep world & gen world like Rolex.

Only thing with a gen watch, I tend to baby them meaning I don't beat them.up like a rep, bumping into things, etc.

Like mentioned above by another poster, I also know people that say I will never spend more than $100 for a watch, what's the purpose but these same people are living in a 300k house & drive nice cars.

Everyone has different taste. My cousin drives a BMW M5, expensive car but won't spend more than $200 on a watch, where I have a friend that drives a jeep & owns 3 gen Rolex watches, a SS Daytona, a 50th aniv Sub & a SS sub. He loves watches like me & could care less about driving an $80k car.

To each their own.

If watches are your thing then I see no reason not to buy what you really want, within reason of course, however I would strongly suggest no one go into debt for an item such as a watch. Buy it when you can afford to do so and get exactly what you want, do not compromise, if you do you'll end up buying it later anyway. I tell people to get the gen watch or watches they really want because those will be your treasures. Other watches you like buy yourself reps and wear them for what they are. I buy myself gens because that's what I like. I may not have 80 gens but I don't need 80 watches. I'm more satisfied having the gens I really want then a boat load of worthless reps I don't give a shit about.

If I could live with one watch, a gen is definitely worth it. If you're like me and your taste fluctuates like your mood, one watch won't cut it. But every watch enthusiast should at least try to have a gen watch (doesn't have to be high end)
