RWI (and your favorite dealer) make(s) it very easy to save the big $$$ and buy almost any PAM you want. Think about it, the money we would of dropped on more Gens is funding all the other cool toys we have.

Almost every watch to me is overpriced now that i'm here.

Matt

i wish they could rep cars. that would be awesome........

or even the whole victoria secret lineup. i'd buy all of them.

My watch maker told me that the cost of an PAM111 is around 800 USD in total.
Around 30% of the sales price goes into the AD pocket, rest is pure profit.

Even worse is Breitling, they use ETA movements.

Rolex is doing also a lot of Profit on their watches but somehow you need to calculate the development costs of their own movement into the pricing.

breitling has the most robust chronograph movements that money can buy and rolex profits go to charity. panerai is just ripping people off and as soon as hollywood is done with them they will go back into the little corner of horology they came from to begin with.

is it a good watch? hell yes, is it an expensive luxury watch? hell no.

Is Panerai overpriced? Slightly... but the quesition you should have asked is : Is Panerai good value? Definately!!!

I have my gen 112 for two years I wear it daily it has scratches and if I wanted to sell it at the moment people would beg me to get it even more than the purchase price.
Resale value is more important I think that the 'idea' of overpriced...
Peopel do not understand that by buying the watch you pay for their watchmakers salaries, the advertisments costs, the free watches to Sly ;) about everything is included in the price.

Are vintage Pams-Rolex etc overpriced? YES because at the end you only get a rusty watch (most of the times not working properly) with the HISTORY and rarity behind it. Is history worths the 100.000$?

So in luxury goods the idea of 'overpriced' is stupid imho.

Agree

You only need to choose the watch that has good resale value like Pam, etc. You pay for the watch and if you get bored, just sell it and it will still has good value even you can get profit. It is the same as you wear it for free in different way.

Don't mean to thread crap here but since we're on the subject of Pams, can anyone explain to me why the nickname of Panerai is PaM instead of PaN?

It is PaM112 for example because it is meant to be 'PA'nerai 'M'odel 112

IMHO, I especially don't see a good value proposition with the base models. It's like buying a car with without air bags, air conditioning or power windows because its more true to the Model T. If I'm paying $6k for a watch, it should at least have a seconds hand damn it.

boo.....you didnt get it.

thats the beauty of the 112 - purely minimalistic design. down to the basics. there is a whole design trend ....furniture, houses, etc.

thats the beauty of some Panerai models, like the 112 - 176 - 232 ..........love it.

I still don't get this thread. The discussion is unproductive as long as we don't have a common understanding of what it means for something to be overpriced. We want to know if genuine Panerai watches cost too much, right? Well, they cost too much for people who can't afford them, that's for sure. They cost too much for people who don't care for Panerai, too. They do not cost too much for people who can afford them and choose to buy them. So what is the question? :?

the question is:

how much does the product cost ? and how much value do i get for it ?

is the price somewhat equivalent ( in realistic relation ) to the value ( in comparison to what a similar product offers )

Panerais prices: value in realtion to value : extremly critical.

very high - because of some celebrities wearing them.....a so called fashion trend.

the few rich Paneristi alone have not pushed up the prices.

==================================================

one example, i bought in the year 1999 a Fortis FligerChrono. swiss ETA 7750 . no safire crystal. cost: 1095 Deutschmark. ( back then 600 US $ )

price - value.....very good.

now, in 2008, same watch - but with safire crystal : 2500 $ ( after Fortis made a good name on the market ) price - value : ridicolous.

thats why i say..... price - value relation of Panerai..... extremly critical.

of course, if you make 15 grand a month....no need to think about such an investment.

Part of the value provided by any luxury item is name recognition, a symbol of status.. brand popularity.. etc.

If someone does not consider those things to be valuable, then that person will not consider the cost to be "worth it".

Heck, we should all understand this concept as we are buying replicas. A genuine Invicta diver watch will be MUCH better quality than a super ultimate edition Submariner rep, and for a much lower price. But many of us buy the replica anyway for the high status brand name. Is the Invicta a better value? Depends on what attributes of the item you consider to be valuable, and how valuable you consider them to be.

true, many factors involved.

i could afford a gen PAM 111H, no doubt. even though not so easy.

but for me.....its not worth it.

thats why i get the next closest thing....for a fraction of the price. good enough for me..

thats the way i see it.

Bingo! I hate Cooper Mini's but love Volvo's and BMW's. Coopers are a great value to "Little People" but to Sasquatch, not so much. I don't buy the comment that a Panerai at Cost is 800.00, add marketing, rent, training and future development of in house movements and it doesn't compute. You would have to be working for Panerai and have full knowledge on every aspect of the business to actually know this and I can assure you a bean counter would not have this information. It is therefore assumed it cost 800.00 for a certain model, which is in my eye, is just that, an assumption.

This is the simple answer, YES, it is overpriced! The question was not, are you willing to pay for it!

I have been many times to the US and when I need to pay for fu**ing Bud in a can 5 USD on Delta airlines I also would say it it overpriced, but I buy it anyhow, even it is f**ked up!

THIS THREAD IS STUPID. IT'S GETTING NOWWHERE!!

Pretty much everything we buy as consumers is over priced. It's all based on perception....
