If you started collecting stinkers before you joined RWI, what do you do with them?

All kinds of problems, cheap movements, just real stinkers... or borderline-redeemable but not really worth it.

What do you do with them? Just throw them out?

Edit: Got a DOA stinker of a speedmaster 1957, which the dealer was obliging enough to take back for store credit. My GMT Master II (bad cyclop, date wheel, aluminum bezel with off-center colors and wide ceramic triangle) apparently has two colors of lume, making me just stop and shake my head at myself...

I consider myself very fortunate to have been familiar with online forums before I looked at acquiring a rep, and thanks to many posts here, I was able to avoid the stinkers. So thanks to everyone who has posted reviews etc here, you have the gratitude of this noob!

I did have an old gold Rolex a friend gave me when I was in high school. I gave that to my brother in law a couple years ago, he was 10 or 12 and thought it was awesome.

I thought you were talking about stinker gens at first! There are so many sub 300 dollar watches that become impossible to sell after you buy em (sadly there are many in higher price points too!). I feel that many cheap gens can fall into a "stinker" category, that's besides the point though..

Those bad reps can be a source of amusement on their own! Canal st level watches have a novelty factor to them, and while you might not wear it, it's just a funny little oddball to have in the collection. I actually went searching for one when I was staying in NY for a month, those guys want way too much though (even after haggling)

You can also practice modding/watch-repair on them, so you can perform quality work on a watch you care about after. I've seen a few members do that before. You could even re-finish a stinker, and turn it into something completely different. That pretty much lets you practice every bit of watch modding on one piece.

I only have two watches in that category, really... a yobokies custom seiko and a Fossil I've owned since high school (first watch I ever bought). Both are kind of beat up, but I don't want to let them go. :p

Using them for practice sounds good, but I have a bad case of unsteady/shaky hands... feel like I'd end up just trashing my money. :(

I've got 8 Stauer watches that, all told, cost me just over $1000. They're mostly quartz and dead. I've never bothered to replace the batteries. I bring them out once in a while and have a good laugh at myself. There's one that I still wear proudly though - it's guitar-shaped. Yeah, there's a Stauer sucker born every minute. [emoji1]

I have a crummy old submariner that I got from a guy I used to work with as his brother lived in china (£110.00 i Paid), at the time I thought it was a fantastic watch lol, everyone in the company had a rep Rolex off of him. Its in a draw at home now looking dirty and very sorry for itself! I will post some pics so we can all have a laugh.

Can anyone with better skills tell me if this is a stinker
Bought 11 years ago, originally green anniversary bezel. Gen Swiss ETA movement and worn for years as a daily beater, including swimming, saunas, hot tubs and everything else an active person gets up to, I used to never take it off regardless what I was doing, with absolutely no problems at all. A fantastic watch mechanically and very tough.
Only thing is, I still don't actually know how good it is visually. Comments welcome

I don't think I'd consider that a stinker, especially for an 11 year old rep!

It's no super-rep, but re-brushing the case/bracelet would leave you with a watch that doesn't look half bad.

I started the same thread 2 days ago! Before I discovered RWI I would leave them in places for strangers to find.

Thanks. You are right, it's no stinker mechanically. I was just never sure visually.
I Cape Codded it a while ago, is it now too polished and shiny? What should I do to 're-brush' it?

Well it looks like you polished some of the brushed surfaces too. A cheap and easy way is to use a scotch brite pad to re-brush the bracelet
